Bye bye bmw, hello Volvo..

So.. New company car arrived and I bid a fond farewell to the bmw.
So I moved the stuff over to the new car and sent the bmw on her way.

The new car is "fine" with a D3 136hp diesel and 8-speed auto.. But it's a small car engine down on power compared to the bmw.

I'm gonna miss it.

Out with old

In with the new

You should've asked for the polestar edition V60. That might very well be my next car, although it's hard to find them in The States.

I'll probably go with the V60 T6 R Design with the integrated child seats, because family racecar.

We are a BMW/Volvo family, and have been for about ten years. I drive the BMW, my wife drives the Volvo. She currently has the XC60 T6 Platinum Ocean Race edition. It's a great family car, and comfortable as hell.

Are the driving lights behind the grille a European BMW factory option or did you go aftermarket?

Aftermarket install. Hella FF200 wzwith 100w halogen bulbs. The highbeam is now very very good
Did a diy writeup back when. Easy install really. Didn't even need a drill.

Couldn't choose any other engine then this one or the even smaller D2.. But I'm on the shortlist for the new v90 when it comes out anyhow, so I'll make due.

Its not so bad actually.. I mean, its a diesel, so the hp isnt Honda hp.. its rated at 136 hp, but it has 350nm (270 ft/lbs) of torque. More torque then the F30 328i and exactly on PAR with the f30 328d. The best thing is that the D3 and D4 engine is the same, so a tune will bring power up to 190hp/470 nm (350 ft/lbs)
- Guess whats on the agenda?

So what do I like about the Volvo?
The Volvo ON-Call with iphone app is great! Just start up the dieselpowered engine and cabin heater with the phone an hour before I leave from work and the car is toasty and ready to go. I live in Sweden, with is farther north then most of Canada, so winter comes early.

Its a very comfortable ride. The Msport chassi on my bmw was great, but abit harsh. The Volvo is geared towards comfort.

The auto.. OMG, this thing blows BMW´s old 6-speed out of the water. Smooth shifts, better downshifts and just generally less intrusive in normal day driving.

More space.. The v60 is bigger. not by much, but that little is noticable. Still would have liked an xc70 if I was going to go "family wagon" style..

The bad?
alot less feel for the road when driving. Steering, brakes, chassi.. Everything is less sporty and communicates worse then the bmw.
The seats are about on par, but the bmw had more side support.
The lights.. Volvo always does good lights and Im guessing the lowbeam is better then bmw, but with the added kidney lights I had on the bmw, that had alot more highbeam. Have to do something about that. I drive alot of backroads with lots of wildlife and not much traffic.

All in all.. I can live with it until the V90 comes availble for upgrade in September.

Thanks for the info! Back in the 1990's I converted my E30 to run a set of Hella H4's/H1's The USA E30 came with BMW's fancy ellipsoid headlights, which were okay, but there was no option to run a hotter bulb. So I got some non-ellipsoid headlight buckets and converted over to Hella's European H4 globes (for us in the States we called the Hella European - they weren't USA DOT legal) for the outboard lights and Hella H1 for the inside highbeam lamps. I ran 80/100W H4 bulbs on the out board lamps and 100W H1 bulbs for the highbeam lamps. So on highbeam it was 400 watts of pure lighting bliss. It was a beautiful set up.

I agree the 8 speed ZF tranny is better overall than the 6 speed. Although I do like the wider gear spacing, it sounds, feels more like a manual, and even the slightly slow shifts remind me of it too. The 8 speeds almost shifts so fast and has so many gears, it's getting a little too close to a CVT for comfort. But it depends a lot on programming. On our Q5 it's a slight bit of a rubber band feel with the turbo lag, similar to a CVT.

One thing I don't like about Volvo's is the FWD layout. It makes fitting a I-6 into the cars unrealistic. If I remember right, the turning circle on some T6 cars is nearly equal to a Chevy Silverado pick-up. The T5 with one less cylinder fits better. Then there's the weight distribution of FWD.

On the positive, all the reviews say the interior is the most comfortable, just a slight bit ahead of Audi, but a little short of the Audi fit and finish and sophistication. I must say, all the new Audi's I sat in the dealer are just all high class feeling except the A3, Q3. They feel more like a VW... which they pretty much are! I really like the VW styling. I think a used XC-60 might replace my wife's Q5 in a few years.

Are you like a very bad driver or something? I thought Volves are only for those people who really need a "safe" car because they are very accident prone (self inflicted mostly).

Thanks people..
So like I said earlier.. The Volvo will probably go away in September in favour for either a Xc60 D4 or the new v90 coming in September.

The company I work for is Swedens biggest Volvo dealership.. And even if they also sell bmw, that was a no go in my department. The upside is that leasetime is two years or 80.000 K.

The seats in the Volvo are actually very nice. Firm and wider then the bmw. I guess I can live without the side support when I get adjustable lumbar support. And the seatheaters are frigging epic!!

Fazman.
No choice.
