Re-mapping the latest BMW ECU software
Here's a question for the mappers out there.
I've heard that the new BMW ECU's cannot be re-mapped legally. This, I think would apply to the 123d at the moment. I think you can hack the existing software which is totally illegal but there is no easy workaround.... |

There is no tuning solution I know of that will succesfully work on the 123d and 120d 177bhp engines.
Legally or illegally I dont know of any tuning company who can remap the later EDC17 ECU. Due to the "legal" team of BMW getting rather "heavy handed" I wouldnt even like to discuss this topic on a open forum |

Dr crap, you can tune them, just not via a re-map of the ECU. A tuning box can be purchased then fitted and will give you a good horsepower and torque gains similar to that of a re-map

I know that this can be the case in terms of intellectual property with computer software, but it's not as if there is a EULA (end user license agreement) for the bmw code .... or is there? In any event, the person who developed the idrive software has nothing to protect. I don't understand how something so simple can be so slow. Why don't they stick a dual core chip in it? |

The question is how are they doing it, there's one thing re-mapping a car and accepting the warranty issues, there's another running a map that has been made illegally.
Also, i seriously doubt the re-map on the new ECU will be 'invisible' I would'nt want to be an early adopter of this mod |

The Superchips offering is not a remap - it is an external tuning box that connects to the ECU to modify fuelling and boost. It is £599 on their website. As such, it is a different product to the CAA offering, and offers only a moderate increase in power (hence its reasonable pricing in comparison). The Procede / Xede / JuiceBox offerings from the States are much the same, with varying levels of power and adjustability, price dependent.

But the gains are quite decent - 343 hp and 490 NM (they started with 305 hp and 419NM). |

Probably. And the fact that there are almost certainly no more than two companies that can actually remap the ECU (that's not to say there are only two companies offering a remap though - just that the work is outsourced to probably only two companies)
