If you have glass coverage then repairs are usually covered for free.
Generally speaking, Windscreen repairs will not correct optical issues - they are to keep chips from turning into larger cracks. I would not recommend attempting to repair it yourself. A glass shop should be able to look at it and recommend if/how it should be fixed. Additionally most resins require the car to be near room temperature to properly bond, so if your car is outdoors in this cold weather trying to use a resin on it will not work properly.

If what you are describing is a "pit" - IE it's a chip in the glass which has only damaged the outer surface, typical resin repairs are not going to do much. It will never optically level the surface, but if it's deep enough it can probably be filled and is then usually taped down to create as level of a surface as possible. It will still more than likely be optically visible.
If you have a deep chip which has actually gone far enough in to crack the glass, then a resin repair is designed to fill the crack in, bonding the glass back together and preventing it from further spreading. If it's cracked enough that you can see the air inside then resin will help reduce the optical effects quite a bit. I have gone through several windshields and windshield repairs. It is worth trying your insurance first because 1 it should be free if you have glass coverage (and if not, you should - it's one of the cheapest premiums to add and I've paid for mine 100x over) - and 2 because if the damage is right in your line of sight, they may recommend a windshield replacement if it's optically that bad. I had a bird shit on the windshield of my 335, and what I didn't realize is there were so many tiny rocks in the bird shit that when I went to spray it off the wipers ended up grinding enough of the rocks creating a series of scratches directly in my line of sight and the windshield needed to be replaced (it was covered).

Bird droppings are the enemy, even the slighest rubbing will sometimes leave fine scratches. When my car has them I just pressure spray them off.
