Question on "M Driver's Package"
Hey All,
Sorry if this is a repost, but not shockingly, a search on M Driver's Package returns just about every single thread in the forum. So, here goes. Based on the googles and other stuff I read, it seems that the M Drivers Package is an order-able option. Based on the order breakdown sticky thread, it is confirmed that it is order-able in the US. I don't believe it was an option when I built mine out. It seems like it is just software. Any guidance? I will ask my BMW rep too, but I like to know the answers before I ask the questions. Thanks. |

In Europe it is raised speed limited to 270km/h and a driving course with BMW in Germany (that you have to pay expenses and travel + hotel for), thats it.
So basically useless for most people. |

I dare to say it is utterly ridicoules to pay like €2K for this. I can live happily without this package, incluiding the whole ///Marketing Performance "ding wings" |

The official limiter is at 250 km/h but they usually cut at 263 km/h. |

Yes, there are a lot less stretches of the Autobahn that are unrestricted but you can still find them here and there.

More and more 120 km/h sections every year. They usually put a "road damage" sign there too - while the road is perfect... Just to fuck with us.

Arg... I remember fondly the 155 MPH rides in a friend's SL500 back in the day. Good times. God, that was 25 years ago. Jesus. I need a drink.

For German buyers it actually does make sense. I'd say that in average every other week I drive 250km/h/155mph and only because I don't need to drive such a long distance that often.

Not many, because the overwhelming majority of cars is not capable of even reaching that speed and from the ones that do, most are electronically limited.
Then of course, you need to find an unrestricted piece of autobahn (not that easy in some parts of Germany), which is also quite empty (impossible at certain times), because there will be cars going 63mph to overtake a truck, changing into your lane right in front of you and without indicating. And if you can't brake fast enough in such a situation, the fault will be yours because of excessive speed. So in short: Very, very few people go quicker than 155mph (or even 155mph at all) in practice. And when they do, it's mostly just for very short stretches. The majority of people drive ~80-90mph on the Autobahn. Even with few cars on it, the left lane usually doesn't go much faster than ~90-110mph. Going faster than that is usually only possible when the left lane is more or less empty. |

Would be very surprised if the limiter isn't lifted on aftermarket tunes anyway. Wouldn't pay BMW to do it if I knew Dinan, for example, would also do it while simultaneously boosting the engine.

Yes, that should be possible (and cheaper). However, there are reasons why some people might not want to go aftermarket with that (leased car, warranty issues, etc.).

That sums it up. There are we and all the 3.0L - 4.0L Diesel which can go up to 155mph but are limited. There are only a handful of vehicles which are not limited. I'd say that in the last year I have seen maybe 10 cars which where going faster than 155mph in maybe 3000 miles on the autobahn. Of course there are a quite a few cars who could go faster than that (all the Porsches and Ferraris) but they don't choose to. |
