Valve cover gasket... Have you done it?

I am sure I read someone on here mention they DIY'd the valve cover gasket.

Mine is leaking pretty bad, so I cannot put it off much longer. I am debating whether to have a go myself (over a weekend) or get it done by the shop.

Most I am worried about is the high pressure system, which I believe needs to be disconnected to remove the cover. Is there anything else to look out for?

I guess it would also be a good opportunity to check for crud or sludge in the lifters?

Fuel lines between the valve cover and injectors need to come off. Just disconnect the battery so the fuel pump doesnt prime and shoot you while you are working and don't over torque the lines going back on so you don't mushroom the flared ends

Granted i work on these cars for a living it's easy for me to say it's an easy job but need some skill to do it correctly

Ask Vince to check the ISTA?

If your's is leaking quite bad its possible you may have a cracked cover also? I decided to bite the bullet and replace the cover as I didn't want to pay the labour to have the gasket changed than realise it was still leaking and have to pay for the labour all over again and change the cover (in this scenario the cover pays for itself so to speak)

Have a look on the other N54 forum there's a lot of talk about PCV smoking issues due to blocked PCV piping in the cover (due to lack of frequent oil changes) which could be potential issues also, and info on how to DIY I'm sure (I'm sure Rob done a DIY guide)

Doesn't look that bad of a job, just DIY it. My ISTA thread already has the instructions in it:

One question and I know you will know the answer to this . The fuel rail lines need to be torqued at 23nm but using what ? Because of the thread type as you use a 13mm wrench to undo

This is actually a really simple process, just go slow and take your time.

I replaced the valve cover at the same time also! Stupid plastic components!! We need a billet version!

I've done it. Easy enough, just don't overtorque the VC bolts. They don't take much to snap. I didn't bother torquing the fuel lines, just nice and firm.

My tip is, when putting the VC back on, get a second person to help holding back the wiring harness. It's really easy to knock the gasket off and you have to try again!

If you find a crack in your VC, i have my old one still which is fine.

If you decide to DIY the gasket, make sure you replace the ecentric shaft sensor as well.

If you have the cash maybe injectors as they have to come out and can cause all sorts of issues if they fail...

am I correct that the new version injectors will not cause all the issues like the older version?
