Oh, it's likely in the works. With most of their rivals jumping onto the CarPlay and/or Android Auto bandwagons, it's only a matter of time before BMW follows suit... unless they're going to use something like Toyota's new alternative platform--which would be a mistake, IMO.

In many ways they've already connected to key apps (Siri, Connected Drive) as part of the iDrive ecosystem and frankly having used both Apple and Android in car - there are some cool features but it's still a very young ecosystem. It's a fast moving space though so who knows, if that combo begins to dominate the space then perhaps they'll reconsider in another generation. I wouldn't expect that for 3+ years though.

The goal should be for the car to integrate with whatever smart phone you've chosen, and to replicate its functions in a simple way. iDrive is a long way from doing that, and worse: when your phone is connected, some of its functions (particularly audible alerts) are intercepted and not passed on. This is pretty much the opposite of what you want.

If my car acted like my smartphone: *turns on car* *BING*Sally liked your photo on facebook *BING*Jim liked your photo on facebook *BING*New Text Message *BING*New email from your boss *BING*New Spam Email *BING*Doug liked your photo on facebook *BING*You have been invited to a facebook *Puts car into gear* Smartphones for most people are a spam of useless notifications drawing your attention away from driving. It is possible to get the car to display all notifications, but the last thing I want is a Snapchat app for my dashboard.

Isn't there a natural limit to what you want on the car's displays anyway? Once you're stationary you can use the phone directly, with the benefit of using the touchscreen etc interface that the apps were designed for. |

(And yes: ) BMW will be among the last of the automakers to implement it. Its corporate mentality toward nonproprietary software is very, very cantankerous -- basically, only if it has to. Sorry, Charlie.
