Old Spice Deodorant Class-Action Lawsuit

Would anyone here happen to be affected by it?

I am. Used OS for years with no issues. After running out, got a new stick with the blue gel maybe a year ago and developed severe stinging rashes (not even close to the level of the plaintiff though) after a few months. Replaced with another one, same issue. Assumed they changed the ingredients, causing the reaction and switched to the powdery white antiperspirant. Also switched body wash to different brand. Been using that for a while now, but just this week, felt some stinging upon application. Goodbye OS; any recommendations on other brands?

Quote:
Procter & Gamble face a potential class action lawsuit over allegations that its Old Spice deodorant products cause chemical burns on unsuspecting customers.

Lead plaintiff Rodney Colley says he relied on Procter & Gamble’s website that reported Old Spice deodorant had “no known effect” in regard to skin irritation when he purchased the product. However, after only a few uses Colley says he developed severe rashes under his arms forcing him to immediately stop using the deodorant.

The class action lawsuit points to 13 different Old Spice products that Colley claims are defective in nature all with similar formula and design specifications. The lawsuit further states that deodorant is not intended to cause burning and rashes.

“The risks associated with the design and formulation of the Old Spice products at issue are more dangerous than a reasonably prudent consumer would expect when used in its intended way,” the class action lawsuit alleges.

According to Colley, there are hundreds of online complaints from Old Spice consumers across the U.S. who have suffered as a result of using this brand of deodorant.

The Old Spice lawsuit claims that Procter & Gamble have profited millions of dollars each year from the sale of this line of deodorant knowing all along that the product was causing injuries to consumers.

Colley wants Procter & Gamble to repay future Class Members from the profits they have unjustly obtained.

“As a direct and proximate result of Old Spice’s pattern and practice with respect to the sale of its deodorant products, consumers were/are personally injured and/or have paid for the use of a full product when in fact they are forced to discard the product after only a few uses and, therefore, are also economically damaged by being deprived the intended use and purpose of the Product,” the lawsuit states.

The plaintiff believes that a class action lawsuit is the most effective way to solve these allegations because while the damages are likely to exceed millions of dollars, the individual amount owed each potential Class Member would be relatively small.

In addition, Colley states that individual lawsuits in this matter would place an unnecessary burden on the judicial system.

“Individualized litigation could involve thousands of separate actions, increasing the delay and expense to all parties and to the court system,” according to the plaintiff.

If the class action gets approved, it would be open to all Class Members who purchased Old Spice deodorant between 2012 and the present.

The plaintiff is represented by Thomas J. Connick and Edward A. Proctor of Connick Law, LLC; and Edward W. Cochran of the Law Offices of Edward W. Cochran.

The Old Spice Burning Deodorant Class Action Lawsuit is Rodney Colley v. Procter & Gamble Co., Case No. 2:16-cv-00225-MHW-KAJ, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio

PG is no stranger when it comes to chem burns in their products. Way back when I worked for a law firm and we handled a case where the plaintiff that used Clairol Nice and Easy. She suffered a 3rd degree chemical burn that took all her hair. She contacted PG after being released from the hospital and they offered an $8 wig. We sued PG and Dupont chemical (they make the active ingredient) for 12mil and settled, I believe on 8.

They sent 4 attorneys down to court and they gave zero fucks and could be seen snickering during court.

I tried OS as a teenager back in the day and had that same skin reaction (ended up tossing it). 20 years later I tried it again and still had the same issue. No OS for me ever again, I've realized I won't buy ANY GEL deodorant from any brand... I'll only buy the powdery stuff. So now I always pop the cover off the deoderant's i buy and check to make sure they are NOT the blue gel type... only the white powdery kind.

Screw the class action crap... only the attorneys get rich on that shit. They will probably just give me a 0.25 cent pack of gum for my suffering

Not much of a brand whore when it comes to body wash - Right Guard, Suave, Nivea, w/e. Never Irish Spring (cuz it smells like you got raped by a Leprechaun) and never Old Spice because either my Grandpa or that black dude may randomly appear in my shower. Also, never Axe because I am afraid it will stain my Affliction shirt collection. But my deodorant/antiperspirant never changes, cuz Florida.

I actually went through the exact same thing, and wondered if it was just me. Switched to the powder and never had issues, also still currently use the body wash gel with no issues.

But man, those pics bring back horrible memories. *shudder*

I've never seen a personal body care product that didn't state on the container
'...if adverse reactions occur...discontinue using product'
I kind of like the original Old Spice smell and could a corporation that makes Pampers be bad?

You know, the OS Timber/After Hours scents are actually not bad! They smell nice. And they linger.

I exclusively used degree for several years. But i switched to the dove for men products and have been happy for it. I'm not a huge fan of antiperspirants, but like you said, Florida. The dove brand makes deodorant and antiperspirant deodorant in the same scents. So i've been going 2 days with antiperspirant, 1 day deodorant. Figure cutting back antiperspirant by 30% or so has some beneficial to my pits.

Quote:
"The aluminum salts do not work as antiperspirants by being absorbed in the body. They work by forming a chemical reaction with the water in the sweat to form a physical plug... which is deposited in the sweat duct, producing a blockage in the areas that it's applied," says David Pariser, MD, professor of dermatology at Eastern Virginia Medical School and past president of the American Academy of Dermatology.
Having your sweat glands blocked for years on end can't be good. lol

I felt the same burning sensation using OS. Quit using it. There are times that my Dove gel causes a bit of a similar sensation yet very mild.

Gels are no bueno, IMO

All antiperspirant is poison. (I use Tom's deodorant.) And as much as I think P&G should be scolded, I'd rather it be by people not buying any more of their poison.
