I'm qutting my job and going into construction

Seriously I have just about had it with this shit. Recently had to redo my whole freaking roof because the sob would get a new leak every week and every single time it was $1k+ to repair. Now this being my first house I had no idea how much a roof costs, well it costs more than a used BMW and I can't even fucking drive it!

Since I'm redoing the roof might as well do the screened in patio that leaks like a rain forest that way they can also do the roof edging which was all rotted where it meets the aluminum roof anyways, there goes another $4k.

Well now I have a new roof so might as well get around to fixing the drywall inside the house where the leak broke through the ceiling after all, that's the part I actually see every day... all these sobs want $1k+ for something that in my mind is a pretty basic freaking job.

Want to pour a small slab of concrete in the backyard to put the old hot tub we took out of the patio on, $2-$3k.

Tile the covered patio which has some kind of nasty epoxy or something. $5k!

I seriously need to consider a career change and get into this construction business for fucks sake!

Ok rant over.

Welcome to home ownership! The exact reason I encourage people I know that aren't willing to swallow hideous repair costs to rent for as long as possible. Buy mods for your BM and let somebody else pay to fix the roof over your head

Ok I actually encourage them to save all that money so when they do buy a house they can cover the shit that undoubtedly will happen, but you could buy mods instead.

youd be amazed at what things actually cost once you figure in labor. I know, im in construction.

Shitty thing is, that those smaller contractors that you are dealing with are making maybe 5-7% profit, which is nothing on a job that size. The jobs I do are much bigger and we bid most work in the 10-15% range

Insurance won't cover your roof?

We just had to put a roof on our house and it was just under $24,000 but because we were hit by a tornado insurance paid for most of it. Still have about 30k in damage to repair...

Got scared and had to google how long do tile roofs typically last.

I am not sure how roofs can cost $30k. Does that mean people in low cost of living areas are paying 20% of their home's value to redo their roof?

I see a lot of $50k trucks with $20k in mods driven by construction workers. There must be money in that field.

Depends on the size of the home and the roof. Our roof is about 6% of our homes value. 5 to 8% seems to be pretty typical here.

Nope because it wasn't damaged by anything it was just old. Wouldn't cover the ceiling inside were it leaked through (which btw happened within 1 day). Don't get me started on insurance especially here in FL, talk about legalized thievery!!!

Mine had to be tile due to HOA requirements. If you had a shingle roof or something like that it's a bit less, still probably like $15k.

And they don't even replace the ENTIRE roof, technically it's really just new roof covering. I had to pay an extra $1k because the amount of ply wood they had to change was more than what was in the contract. Motherfucker for that kind of cash you replace ALL the damn wood rotted or not!!!

In South Florida there will probably be a lot of unlicensed dudes who can do work on the cheap. Had great results with this here in Texas. It's worth trying as long as everybody is able to communicate.

OP, look on Craigslist for construction work, especially in Miami. In Broward or PBC you don't need to speak Spanglish

It's been 18 years but I remember picking the color of the shake roof I wanted, then every couple of days a few bundles would show up, or maybe some plywood. After enough made its way from my BIL's work to my house, 3 guys showed up on a Saturday. I bought about 10lbs carne asada and a case of beer. When they got about 2/3 done I fired up the BBQ and handed them $100 each with their first beer and plate of tacos. Everyone was happy after a few hours

Man I put trays of carne asada and coronas in my trunk and drive around home depot hoping to snag some of these guys, no luck!

PS: On the bright side I get to go home after and wipe my tears with carne asada and beer

Dang, I just drive into the parking lot, with no desire to pick anybody up, and they crowd around the truck. ESPECIALLY if my Hispanic wife gets out of the passenger side.

Can't they tell I married into a work force??

Have you ever hung drywall? It's hard, miserable work, even more so if you're actually doing a good job.

Seriously, by all means, buy a couple sheets and get your DIY on. You won't bitch about the cost of it anymore, because you will be happy to pay it. I'm a DIY kinda-person, and if I ever own a home that needs drywall repairs I will absolutely be outsourcing.

I poured concrete and did roofs while during the summers while I was in high school. More than anything else, that's why I went to college - I wasn't gonna be stuck doing that for the rest of my life.

This is really the reason why all service industry work commands a high price.. No one wants to do it so that industry is overwhelmed with work with very little skilled workers on-board.
