But I am new here and some others are too.
Has everyone had a problem with burning oil, about a quart every 3-4 thousand miles? A friend of mine says this is normal on turbos, since turbos often spin on oil and thus burns oil up. Now I keep a quart in my car (because German oil cost 23 Euros). So any new buyers beware, the dealer never told me to watch for it. |

As to burning oil, my 335i Coupe just topped 1,200 miles and the digital oil gauge has not dropped from the max. hash mark.

Well since I am American military, I buy my oil & gas on a military installation but if I need oil and am driving and must stop at a gas station than I pay 23 Euros. I feel bad for these guys, they probably never want to change their oil at those prices.

And how frequent are your routine oil changes?

Mine came up this week after about 8800 miles.... I drive my car hard... but if you are a regular autobahner and driving at those insane speeds in lower gears (meaning the rpm is constantly between 3 and 5 + K), then I think your oil buring out that fast sounds about right. Here we rarely get a chance to get at those speeds and I for one try to keep my rev range between 1.8 - 3.5 K in the city.

Then I would'nt be too concerned about it... but to be on the safer side, make sure that you get it serviced at closer intervals and monitor your oil level every 2.5K miles.... tips on having a healthy car

I have over 20,500 miles on my car and I have not burned a quart of oil yet. And I drive it hard, I have changed the oil 3 times already, only once when the computer told me to. I will hit my second warranty oil change in a little over 4000 miles.

Mobil-1 every 5000 miles for the first 170,000. Every 3,333 since 170,000 (I don't drive the car much now. It's my winter-beater and station car. The oil started looking dirty after 3,000 miles. The car still has a dipstick, so it's easy to see.)
I'm planning on throwing caution to the winds and going to 7,500 mile oil changes on the BMW since it's naturally aspirated. Volvo NA said dino-juice was just fine when the car was new. I had to provide my own Mobil-1 oil for the oil changes. I thought they were nuts.

Normal. It's not uncommon for n/a BMWs to burn oil, let alone an FI engine. It's really luck of the draw/how you break it in that determines how much oil you burn.

The car didn't indicate any loss of oil (about 1/2 qt) until it had about 3000 miles.

I have 4500 miles on my car and had to take it in for a top off, b/c I got the "add a 1/4 of oil" sign. The guy at the dealership said that it's normal to burn off oil during the break-in period. I'm planning on getting my first oil change around 5,000-6,000 miles, although the computer says I don't need one for another 11,000 miles.

Thanks everyone. Sounds like most of you are not having the problem I am.
Maybe it is because I drive over a 100MPH alot. The dealer told me not to worry but personally I dont know to trust him. But my car sounds great and flies just like it did from day one. Just live with watching my oil. |

I'm jealous. I'd take having to add a quart of oil every now and then to be able to drive over 100 mph a lot.

Not sure if this really helps but I had to add about 2 quarts of oil in the first 10,000 miles of owning the car. However, since then I have not needed to add oil in between oil changes. I do have a friend with a 335 who adds a quart every 2-3k miles though...I dont think there is any definitive answer.
