It appears from what I've read that the new 8spd has wider gear ratios (slightly better fuel economy) and is actually rated slower from 0-60 than the current M235 8spd. Anyone confirm or have conflicting info?

Road test have shown that the 340i is slower than 335i. So I wouldn't be surprised if the M240i is slower.

It has more torque so slightly wider gears shouldn't be an issue. In fact given that they aren't putting wider tires on like the M2, the gearing may provide an easier launch for RWD cars, plus I don't think the gearing is changed that substantially. Xdrive cars could use lower gearing however as they have no traction issues at launch. Just a guess, but it should perform close to stage 1 M235i's based on power numbers and factory tune. Plus seems to take well to tuning more than N55 platform. Again the added power of a tune would benefit from the wider gear ratios.

BMW have listed the 0-62 0.2 faster than the M235i, no doubt the extra torque more than makes up for the change in ratios

Turbos like load. Wider gears = more load. I highly doubt the M240 will be slower than the M235. It makes more power everywhere.

No equivalent, same road, same conditions, or back to back testing will show a 340i AT to be slower than a 335i AT.

I hade a 2013 335i MSport 8AT and now have a 2016 340i Msport 8AT.
I wasn't expecting anything near the differences that there are between the 2 cars.
And, this isn't just about power and speed. Yes, the new 3.0T in the 340i is more powerful and I can easily feel the extra torque. Is it faster?
My butt dyno says the 340i is faster certainly not slower.
But, overall the 340i drives better, handles better, rides better, and is just smoother and better all around.
I loved my 335i Msport, and I love my 340i Msport even more.

The new steering rack has more feel. Power assist is a bit lower, which I prefer. Adaptive suspension is firmer in both comfort/normal and sport modes. I am amazed at how great comfort mode really is. It still has that great smooth controlled ride like the 335i adaptive had, but there noticeably less body roll and more control in comfort mode in the 340i.
In sport mode in the 340i the overall ride is controlled, firmer, and has reduced body roll, a very nice improvement over the 335i version.

The tweaked sport 8AT is even smoother if you can believe it as it was already like butter. The greater improvement is in the "manual" shift mode where response feels instantaneous.

And for me, the 340i's Msport brakes feel better. The pedal feel is firmer, requiring less pedal travel before engaging, and the new pads feel a LOT better as there isn't that overly aggressive initial "bite" that the 335i Msport brake pad had. Braking feels nicely controlled with pedal pressure rather than pedal travel. The 335i Msport brakes were very nice as well, it's just that the 340i brakes have a more refined feel.

The 340i Msport is a noticeable improvement over the 335i Msport, more so to those who have spent a good amount of time in each.
I'm looking forward to test driving an M240i and even more so I want an M240i SEDAN to compete against the very sweet Audi S3.
BMW needs to bring it and bring it BIG.

That was Motortrends actual road test. Their 340i was slower than a 335i.

You can't rely on magazine tests to prove whether one car is "faster" or "slower" than another, especially given that the 335i and 340i are almost identical. The weather conditions can affect traction and engine power and those figures can change between runs. There are a lot of factors. Fractions of a second differences in 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are a nit; a second or two is much more significant.

As mentioned above, the driving dynamics (particularly steering feel and turn-in) are much improved on the 340i. I've even noticed the difference between my 335i and my wife's new 228i as far as that factor. Would I like to have a new 340i? Sure...but my 335i is only 3 1/2 years old and it's not time to trade up yet - particularly since I've only got just under 21K miles on it.

That 228i/240i Sedan is currently aimed at the Asian market, but I'd sure be interested if they do decide to bring it to the US in RWD form. Considering that our 228i is not that much shorter (in overall length and wheelbase) than our 335i, I bet it won't have much less room inside.
