Reckless BMW driver arrested after outing himself on social media
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com MASSAPEQUA PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Police on Long Island have arrested a Bronx man for allegedly racing his BMW upwards of 100 mph on the Long Island Expressway. As CBS2’s Tony Aiello reported, police said they were able to identify the suspect because a second BMW driver posted it all on social media. The shocking video had police and other drivers outraged. The video, posted on YouTube and Facebook, showed at least two drivers speeding between lanes, careening in and out of the high-occupancy vehicle lane, and racing along the LIE mid-morning last week. “He’s operating that vehicle, by our estimates, in the neighborhood of 100 miles an hour, and he’s not a professional driver,” said Nassau County Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter. “And if he makes a mistake, then people are going to die. That’s depraved indifference.” From the social media postings, police said they tracked down the owner of the blue BMW – identified as Darran Anderson, 23 – outside his Bronx home. Police said they also confiscated his vehicle there. “He’s a poster child. If you look at his driving history, he has an open speeding ticket in the Bronx, and he has a number of other violations,” Krumpter said. Krumpter said Anderson is facing only misdemeanor charges because state lawmakers have been unable to agree on measures upgrading reckless speeding to a felony. “He’s really a dangerous person,” said Millie Palumbo of Wantagh. Meanwhile, Nassau County residents told CBS2 they are fed up with drivers who use the highway as a racetrack, and place other drivers at risk of a serious collision. “It’s terrible that other people will be involved in an accident because of his irresponsible way of living,” Palumbo said. Police said they believe at least three drivers were racing as they headed for a car show at a Nassau County dealership, including the passenger, who posted the video and can be seen briefly in the side mirror. “That second individual, the one who is posting this video, we are very close to identifying him,” said Nassau County Police Detective Sgt. Patrick Ryder. Police said they will now move to seize Anderson’s BMW under the county’s forfeiture law – even as the search continues for the person who posted the high-speed highway race. If convicted of reckless endangerment, Anderson could face up to a year in jail. His next court appearance is July 16. |

The first rule is NEVER weave in and out of traffic. You will not get there any quicker, and even worse if it's for fun you are a complete tool. Not much really pisses me off but this surely does.
Go out in the middle of the night and only put yourself a risk. I'm cool with that.

Topic says "outing himself" but the article claims the guy who filmed it (also driving a BMW) was the one who posted it. So it's really just a case of being caught in the act by another motorist.
Hopefully said motorist was smart enough to cover his tracks such that he will not be identified. Sure, he was driving recklessly as well, but he had to in order to keep up. That being said, and despite that I would not pursue justice against him myself, I wouldn't condone that type of action in this specific case due to the fact that he also endangered others. Now, in a hit and run or some other egregious act, as long as traffic isn't prohibitive, sure - chase him down. Granted I wasn't there, so I'm not throwing stones. Clearly the guy in the lead car is dangerous driver so its good that the video helped apprehend him and that he will at least face misdemeanor charges. |

not to make light of the situation, but towards the end of that video (if you were able to view the uncut version)...
a white E36 M3 basically zooms by on the right shoulder passing everyone. #nofuksgiven the mustang guys are chomping at the bit as they finally have some fodder/vindication.

While I don't condone this sort of shit at all and think this guy is a complete dumbass, a felony charge seems a bit over the top, why not just a misdemeanor?
I could see busting out the felony charges if someone gets hurt but not for what equates to speeding and driving like a dumbass. |

While I don't agree with driving like that- especially with so many cars on the road, the problem is social media. There's zero privacy anywhere. Now all these drivers and motorcyclists have cams taping while they're on the road. Who's to know what they're doing with that footage. While I know that we're on public roads, that doesn't mean I want someone posting my vehicle or myself. I've had riders stop to talk to me at lights for instance and they've had cams on their helmet. It makes me super uncomfortable.

I don't condone driving this reckless but this is actually normal racing in New York. I've seen way more sketchy driving. This is nothing compared to what's on YouTube on roads nearby and what I've seen in person.
Being from NY Im not the most innocent driver so I'm actually impressed how he was able to fit through that. But not knowing what could've been coming on the HOV is just being stupid. |

I see that shit out her in Southern Riverside County all the time where the roads tend to be less congested just not as common when traffic is real heavy and stop n go.
Had seven cars come up from behind on the 215 around 9pm by March AFB south last year all racing, as traffic was slowing one of the 7 passed me in the emergency lane far right doing about 100 with a cloud of dust and debris.

Im sure everyone drives in and out of traffic like this at least once if not multiple times in their BMW. In my oppinion this guy Is unlucky and being singled out with a crazy charge that every driver with a BMW and any fast car for that matter will do at some point in its lifetime. You find a ton of videos online of people publicly racing their car on the roads 10 times worse then what was shown in that video. This kid could be facing a year in jail? Outrageous IMO

I love how the reporter gets all serious with "Speeds estimated of around ONE HUNDRED. . . MILES. . . AN HOUR."
It was unsafe as F to be doing that in between lanes and weaving the way the guy did, but 100 MPH is like 4 seconds at WOT from normal highway speeds. Its not THAT fast. Just to reconfirm: That guy is an idiot. And the guy filming him is an idiot snitch.

Someone's gotta be made an example. I wouldn't be surprised if they use this case and others like it to start pushing for speed cameras on the LIE and Northern State. Thanks for ruining it for the rest of us, a**holes. Now we're all going to suffer at 55mph together.
