Crankshaft on N52 uses 60-2 pulse wheel?
Looking for some timing details on crankshaft / camshaft relationship. Thought it may be in ST501 New Engine Technology.pdf (can't find it online either). If anyone knows the details on crankshaft and camshaft teeth per revolution, please let me know!

yes it's 60-2. Hall effect sensor. I don't know where Tooth #1 is in relation to TDC, but I assume its similar to every other BMW engine made for the last 20 years or so.

Thanks, that should get me started. I'm doing a 2JZ Swap into a Z4 (I own a 2007 3.0si Automatic), and attempting to make it OBD2 compliant (difficult, I know), incorporating a standalone for engine management, and the MSV70/Wiring harness to keep the rest of the vehicle happy and not throw any codes. Part of this experiment will be potentially creating a programmed uController which will convert the engine parameters into expected N52 parameters (e.g., crank timing signals, cam timing signals), which means I'll need to understand the N52 fairly well.
While we're at it, can you point me to some info on reprogramming the instrument cluster from automatic to Manual? What software do I need? What hardware do I need, and what steps should I take? I plan to leave the Automatic control box in place, unless it is advisable to unplug it...

You need NCSexpert. It's called "coding" if you're not familliar with BMWs - you just need to remove the automatic option from the VO. There's a subforum dedicated to coding here.
It might be simpler/better to run your own engine computer though and use a CAN interface instead to keep the car happy. I think the Z4 is CAN11H, not BN2000, so there are definitely ways to drive the instrument cluster etc. You don't strictly need MSV70 to do that. |
