Extended bolts or Studs
Quick question to the people who have added spacers. Are you guys just getting extended bolts or swapping to studs?

Stud kit if you are planning on removing the wheels frequently, I go to the track 4 times a year and swap brake pads before/after each event. Studs just make it easier to reinstall the wheel if you have a spacer installed since you don't have to line up the holes.

We're running the Motorsport Hardware pitch conversion stud kit. It converts the nut side of the threads to M14x1.5 from M14x1.25 so that the threads are thicker and less prone to damage when frequently removing or changing wheels. So far we have 6 track days with no issues and have had up to a 15mm spacer installed as well. Details here

Tire Rack does sell a stud conversion kit for the M2.
Black lugs - http://www.tirerack.com/accessories/...B&ID=209&a=FW5 or Polar light lugs - http://www.tirerack.com/accessories/...5&ID=210&a=FW5 * Note – because of the M14 thread, the nuts now have a 19mm head and requires a 19mm socket. Cannot do a 17mm socket on M14 thread. ** BMW switched to M14 hardware for a reason => clamping force. *** All of the our Tire Rack test cars have this stud kit on them. Please let me know if I can help further. Thanks!! |

I would like to know as well. Also is that a reputable company? Couldn't find much info and I have never heard of them. And are the nuts ball or conical seat?

The stud length is 62mm, should be more than enough for almost any spacers.
TPI is very reputable. As said, we have been using these on all of our test cars for seveal years and have not had any problems. Keep in mind, our test cars are driven very hard for 5-8 hours, daily. These cars go through a lot of abuse. These kits are conical seat. Last edited by Rudy@tirerack; 01-06-2017 at 08:19 AM.. |

One lase question, how do they get installed. Is there an allen key slot on the end of the stud to tighten them down?

So that special socket is for the studs? Not the nuts....

Then the lug nuts are tightened down using a standard 19mm socket. |

So they came already. They are definitely nice quality, but they seem to short to me. See the pics.....
The first pic shows the amount of thread left after the minimum amount of turns of the nut onto the stud, which is 10 turns. That looks to me like there is barely enough room for the thickness of the wheel let alone the addition of the 10mm spacer. The second pic shows how much thread is left on the nut after the minimum amount of 10 turns of the nut onto the stud. The nut would only be about halfway onto the stud after it is tightened down. I think that these studs are way to short and probably unsafe. I was expecting the stud to at least come to the end of the nut. They should be at least 10-15mm longer. Any thoughts??

They look long enough to me, at least without spacers, but i haven't measured from the wheel's mounting surface to the bottom of the lug seat.
The part of the stud that protrudes past the threads after the minimal number of turns is taken with the nut should have no bearing on safety (unless the nut backs WAY off), but may limit the size of the spacer you can run. The second pic would look the same if the stud were 3 feet long - and the same for pretty much any similarly designed lug nut. You should try pulling one lug bolt off, screwing in one of the studs, and then seeing how much stud is left under the nut after you hit the minimum number of turns. That should let you know how big of a spacer can be run. |

Thanks for the reply, but the reason for the studs was to run a minimum of 10mm spacers. And I would think that you would want the stud to protrude through the nut completely, for maximum safety. How could the second pic look the same if the stud was 3 feet long (I get that you are exaggerating) Wouldn't the stud stick out way past the end of the nut, even if it was say, a 90mm long stud? I will try installing one tonight and see how it looks.
