What about all the problems with this engine?
I care more about whether they finally fixed the issues with this engine: excessive oil consumption, heat problems, and poor durability.
The N63 engine variants are considered some of the most problematic (if not THE most problematic) engines you can buy these days. |

A couple of them oil related. Lets hope it fixes things Not saying it doesn't have issues, but the N63 is nowhere near the most problematic engine you can buy, its not even BMW's most problematic. Have found most N63TU here quite reliable

The N63TU is more reliable than the N63, but it's still unreliable and an excessive oil burner. Even BMW dealerships aren't shy about recommending staying far away from these engines - that has been my experience when talking to them about the issues with mine. I like this car, but the engine kills it for me. I would wait for the new Audi S6. |

Some of the smaller Petrol engines have had big oil sludge problems for years (casing all kinds of failures), but the new Shell oil seems to have helped that a lot recently compared to the old Castrol oil. The US dont get many of these engines though.

Any word on how they extended the torque curve? New turbo part number, or maybe improvements to the intake plumbing/intercoolers?

My 2012 550ix has not had a single engine problem. In five years I have added oil once in between oil changes. |

Bummer
I feel like I don't belong. My N63tu has yet to burn a drop of oil in 17,000 miles and has yet to have an issue of any kind.
Of course, the above statement just doomed me.

To be fair, my friend from college had one of his turbos blown on his last gen X6 50i a few years ago but it was fixed under warranty.. That kinda scared me away from a 650i and got I the 640 instead when the new 6er was launched. But since then I haven't heard of any issues from two other friends who DD cars with the same engine. Probably should've got that 650i lol

My brother's 7 years old x5 v8 (n63 I believe) is eating oil as if there is no tomorrow. No leaks or oil smoke. Dealer said it is normal. It takes 1 can per 1000-1500mi. It just started recently as his driving pattern has changed. He is not happy.
