Help! Insect/Animal (I Think) Noise From My Engine Bay!
Hi all,
This is somewhat urgent. I had pulled my car into the garage for the evening when I noticed this screeching coming from the engine bay. When the car was in the driveway, I dismissed it as a hawk up in the trees somewhere. But, from the video, it's obviously coming from the car. The sound only happens when I'm silent, and is spaced 30 seconds to a minute apart. The car is turned off and in sleep mode (start button light turned off) while I hear it. I opened the intake box but nothing was there. It's an 07 E93 335i with no issues (that I know of). I don't want to close the garage with something in the car. I have two cats, but they are useless hunters. Is anyone here an insect specialist or have heard this noise come from a car before? Thank you! Is the noise is coming from where you have the camera pointed? If so, the only two components I can think of in that area which might make a wierd noise like that are the water pump and the HPFP. I've read that the water pump will cycle once the car is off to cool the turbos. Maybe try the water pump bleed procedure to see if your water pump is making any weird noises (hard to tell when the engine is running). I guess it could also be a vacuum or PCV leak causing the sound. Mine make a groaning noise from time to time but yours sounds more mechanical / electronic.

I'm still hearing the noise, but it has changed pitch. Interesting! I've owned this car for years and haven't heard this before. I may disconnect the battery and see if anything changes.

Super strange sound!
I was thinking the throttle body since it's electronic, but doesn't make sense why it would make a noise when car is off. I wonder if it is related to the HVAC system? Just a thought. We have a Nissan Leaf, and while it has a completely different HVAC system, heat pump and all, it makes some funny noises after shutting it down. Similar to what you're hearing but not as loud and the noise lasts longer. Maybe there is something wrong with mine, but it is so intermittent I can't make it recreate. Anyways, disconnecting the battery is a good thought. See if the noise persists. Good luck! |

Not an animal or insect, but probably something with HVAC valve/pressure related

Well, I went to disconnect the battery but haven't heard anything. I'll chalk it up as a fluke. Just really didn't want a bug or animal to be inside the house.

I spend a lot of time in my garage. With two BMW's and an Audi making all sorts of noises while they are sleeping. You'll hear things. Clicking, high pitched whines, grunts and groans...they are just restless sleepers. My 328i makes a noise just like yours, that goes on for a minute and a half and then stops.
