Glass polish/scratch remover- recommendations please

I'd like to try and remove some fine scratches and the general sense of age in the windscreen of an older car. It's otherwise in decent condition- no major scratches, chips or repairs, just that I notice, especially in low sun conditions, that it has lots of really, really fine scratches... almost the glass equivalent of swirl marks so to speak.

I've seen glass polish/renovators/scratch removers before, but never tried any before, so thought I'd check the wisdom of the forum first.

Thanks in advance!

There's a guy called Ian on eBay who sell kits for around £20 comes in a plain packaging everything included in the kit. I've used it last year and it does work but fairly time consuming job.

ok thanks. What's involved? Could it be made easier if you have a machine polisher?

How much is the windscreen excess on your insurance. Likely about £50 and doesn't affect your no claims bonus.

Are you thinking what I'm thinking lol.

It has crossed my mind, but I actually think it's still the original screen, and given that otherwise there are no chips or damage I just thought I'd look in to what these offer first.

I have this kit and its brilliant -

http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/engine.../prod_988.html

Bought after my last car's windscreen received a fairly deep wiper scratch. This got rid of it, with a lot of elbow grease mind. If you're only doing it by hand I doubt you'll get better than this.

Terry, you may remember I posted last year regarding very stubborn tree sap which had burnt into the paint lacquer and the windscreen of may car.

I contacted Ultimate Finish and had a very helpful email and phone call from Sean Smith. This is what I ordered :

Esclate for the lacquer.
G1 ClearVision SmartGlass (to remove the sap).
G4 Glass Nano Polish.

Applied with microfibre pads.

The Escalate and the G1 Nano polish have a very gentle cutting action but so fine that they leave a zero-swirl finish. The EG1 took quite a bit of effort because the film from the sap had bonded with the glass, but it was worth persevering. Both products worked brilliantly, to the extent that I didn't need the G4 (but will be cleaning all glass on the car when the weather improves, and will use it then).

Hope that helps.

Thanks Dave, have ordered some. Always dangerous when I'm on the Clean your car website... somehow just spent £90!

Thanks Ian, I'm going to give this car pro stuff a go as I can use it with my DA polisher, so got some glass pads too. I've actually got some G4 to use afterwards already, and so bought some G1 too to try as a final step.

All you need is an electric drill everything else is included in the kit a very good step by step guide also. Just mix the powder with some water and start polishing.

I need to order a few bits from clean your car and have been meaning to get a glass polishing kit to rejuvenate the wife's old 330. Will be using it with either the DA or rotary. Any recommendations? The e46 has some pretty good wiper trails and ones in the door glass from the seals

I just posted a thread somewhere else on this forum this morning, but just came across this one.

Dave - How deep was the scratch on your windscreen please?
Yesterday something on my wiper blade scratched an arch right in my line of sight! To say I was pee'd is an understatement.
I can just about feel the scratch with my fingernail, so do you think this will do the job?

Thanks!

One thing though, I've had three windscreens replaced over the years and I'd swear that the last two at least (E90 and an Avensis) were noisier post-replacement. I know fit should be the same as factory standard, but in both cases I think wind noise increased due to less accurate fitment.

Sounds very similar to mine, was right across centre of driver's blade sweep and when the sun shone on window was bloody annoying. The Ceri glass does the job - it comes supplied with Rayon blocks if doing it by hand as I did. Was quite hard work over 30-45 mins iirc but worth the effort.

+1 for this kit. The block pads didn't work for me as my scratch was deeper. It works best using some Reyon glass polishing pads. Stick one to your orbital / DA polisher and away you go. Well almost... you need to have a bottle of water to hand. At least one litre. This will be used to cool the glass between breaks. Don't polish it for 10 minutes straight as it will get very hot. Keep an eye on temperature by using a temperature infra red gauge if you can otherwise just touch it quickly and remove your finger as if you had removed it feom something in disgust - to avoid getting burned.

I have the CarPro cerium oxide polish, rayon pads and a DA polishing machine. If you can catch your finger nail in the scratch then you willl spend a month of Sundays trying to polish it out with this stuff. If you start taking material off the glass to bottom out a scratch on the front or rear screens then there is the danger of creating a hollow that the wiper blades won't touch.
