Maybe we will all be driving electrics sooner than we thought
This could be huge news for the automotive industry.
Maybe we will all be driving cheap electric cars sooner than we thought. Seems almost too good to be true. https://news.utexas.edu/2017/02/28/g...n=utnewsshares Last edited by MightyMouseTech; 03-03-2017 at 05:00 PM.. |

battery improvements will certainly be welcome in mobile devices
until they solve the issue related to reliance on rare earth metals in battery production as well as longevity I dont see any "revolution" happening. electric cars with regenerative features and other systems will continue to be more complicated (read more expensive to manufacture and maintain). the grand tour had a great episode on the real world use of electric vs petrol between an i3 and a GTI if I recall correctly. Until electrics match the convenience and price of conventional vehicles....... |

I skimmed the article and didnt see a reference to the elimination of dependence on rare earth metals |

Yes but does it use them in other ways and not just ro replace lithium. If it does, this would fix one of my problems I have with electrics. I'll be satisfied when the battery life goes for 400 miles, recharges in under 5 min, doesn't need replacing for over 100k, is similar priced and weighs a similar amount to an ICE. This at least makes them less damaging to the environment than an ICE for the first time.

Thank god Kathleen Wynne just reduced our hydro by 25%, although Toronto Hydro has said that if 10% of the cars on the road were electric the grid couldn't support the additional load, that and Ms Wynne wanting us to all heat with electricity in the future. At least if you buy a Tesla she'll give you a $14,000. rebate.

We have a HUGE overcapacity at night, exactly when most electrics would be charging. Last edited by MightyMouseTech; 03-04-2017 at 11:50 AM.. |

Exactly. It comes down to the grid not the price of the car. No one would get an EV if they couldn't charge it because our electrical grid was overloaded and crashing from all the EVs

Better batteries would have a much bigger impact on my life wrt mobile devices/laptops than they ever would wrt transportation
Not sure I personally would be overly thrilled with being more dependent on electric grid |

So after all it might not even be the amount of lithium or whatever other element is used as anode/electrolyte in the battery, but how much copper we can find to beef up the global electricity grids

Maybe that is the real reason we have taken copper pennies out of circulation here in Canada, stock pile all that copper.

If they do become prevalent, the grid in the US and in Canada will have to go through major overhauls. The US grid at peak times has very little excess power. Peak times are at early night when you'd be plugging in. All the lights. I think this is one of Trump's infrastructure plans. Updating and upgrading the grid. Not just potholes.

Europe also has no copper coins anymore. the copper 1/2/5ct are copper plated.
You also see more and more aluminium wiring where the strands are copper plated.

I said get to 400. Its at 200 right now. And thats driving perfectly, not sporty which kills it much faster. If the faster recharge can get to 5 min with readily available AC or 220v and without without monsterously expensive superchargers everywhere then that's another check on the list.

This 'savings' is remortgaged now over 30 years instead of 20 years so my kids can still fund this nonsense with an additional cost of billions. We produce more electricity than we consume but are tied into excessive rates with energy producers. Tied to green energy costs that are double for wind and 3 1/2 tines for solar as per the auditor general. But 25% savings for now will buy lots of votes. |
