Hi guys,

new user here, joined few days back.

I've read previous posts on here and see most users have a side business they do.

i have 2 ideas and was wondering if you guys can help as i cannot decide between the 2.

1. Laptop/pc repair in my spare time. Targeting SOHO users, general users and maybe small businesses. Mostly doing network troubleshooting, pc/laptop repairs, hard drive recovery, etc. Thinking about charging around £25 per hour for my services. plan is website and business cards. leafleting as marketing.

2. 1 on 1 martial arts classes, at client homes. going through pad work, kick bag, self defence, etc. charging around £20 per hour. targeting kids, teens and adults. i also have a womans self defence program in mind. would mostly be teaching kickboxing, boxing, muay thai.

i have over 20 years experience in both professions, a 2nd degree blackbelt in karate and have fought in local tournaments with over 7 years as a coach teaching from 3 year olds to 60 year olds.

my question is which do you guys think would be best suited to do a few hours per week?

the first thing, do you have that ability to teach ? some people just don't have the knack.

Anyway, both are great business ideas, do both and lots of success.

i taught for several years and enjoyed it. i do actually miss teaching days

I'm thinking pc repair may be more suitable as part time business as you can schedule to your liking more easily as opposed to training karate which would probably be more rewarding socially but also much more time consuming.
I'm in neither of these professions just looking in as an outsider,good luck whichever you choose as I'm sure both can be profitable.

I think you should tag team up w/ somebody who knows cameras/home security, and market a 'whole life protection plan' - tune and protect their PC, martial arts, and home setup (with the little extras, like making sure their babycam and router aren't open to cruisers). At just a few hrs per week, you may be able to work off word of mouth once you get rolling. If you do the PC repair, expect to get 'emergency calls' and more demand for ASAP repairs than you may want, if the rest of life isn't flexible.

I fix computers and electronics on the side, mainly for people I know and their friends. Charge around $20 an hour plus parts. 99% of the time, it's simple stuff, like HDD replacement or adding ram.

I don't take on many computer jobs, as my main job gets hectic. I don't do it for the cash, more so because I like doing this work for fun. That said, I make a good amount of cash during my free time.

Definitely recommend doing it if you know what you're doing and are good at time management.

I didnt know computer repair still even exists... 99% of the time its cheaper just to buy a new computer....

Martial arts... thats quite niche... but self defense for women always seems like a good idea.

im still torn between which venture i should pursue. may have to speak to the wife also and see how much time i can spare towards this each week and see what will work in the long run

The PC repair is the one that can lead to bigger and better things if you're smart about it. Personal training will be extremely hard to turn into something more, and your schedule will most likely be less flexible and it will be less consistent. People get sick, busy, lose interest, etc. That's not a path I would go down.

Yes at times it is but let's say your system crashed and you got that report you been working on and a shit ton of pics you can't part with. What are you gonna do buy a new pc?

I was a PT for about a year and a half when I was in school. Main problem is most people quickly lose motivation when they realize that "it ain't gonna be that easy". Then you got people who will stick around and learn all they can about routines and proper exercise execution. Then they will strike out on their own, for which you can't blame them.

In Amsterdam, 1 on 1 for one hour with a (former) pro MMA trainer, you will get charged about 60-80 EUR.
Keep in mind that customers usually seek additional diet and fitness advice as well.

I don't know about London but Kickboxing is hot the Netherlands. Could be a good side business.
