Thinking of Putting the bimmer in dry dock

My car runs well but I am plagued again with some problems. After having my HPFP replaced and crankshaft sensor replaced I still have a long crank and a rough start compared to this 14 BMW 335i I checked out. It started so smoothly compared to mine. I am at a point where I need to do the following:

Thermostat (will go ahead and do a water pump while its out).
Oil Pan Gasket
Valve Cover Gasket
Injectors / Plugs
Carbon Blast

My bimmer is not my daily so was thinking of tackling these repairs on my own over time and just put her in "dry dock" while I do it because the labor on these repairs exceeds the value of the car which i've been quoted around $6k to $6.5k.

Am I a crazy man to tackle these repairs?

These cars are keepers if DIY.

That's a ridiculous price for those repairs. Even if you DIY all but the walnut blast and oil pan gasket, you'd be saving half that.

That's good for trade-in! You are better off if you sell it on Craiglist.

I know right. It is what it is I guess. The car is almost 10 years old so makes sense to some degree but I was expecting at least 9k.

I hope the dealer at least offered you some lube before trying to rape you that bad. Its tax season right now you should be able to get top dollar for your car easily on Craigslist.

BMWs are not low maintenance rides never have been never will be. However once you sort out those items you mention you should have a pretty solid ride. I did all you did except the valve cover and pan gasket but did have to fix the ABS. My ride has been solid since then which is about 2 years ago and I am at 76K miles. Mine is the every other day daily driver and I have found that my E93 doesn't like to sit it likes to be driven, keep that in mind....

Thx, will keep that in mind while doing the repairs. Was quoted $1k for the oil pan gasket and about $800 for the valve cover gasket. $500 for the walnut blast and another $500 to replace the thermostat. Injectors was a $2k job. This is what got me thinking about just taking some time to get everything done right.

Oil Pan Gasket
Valve Cover Gasket
Injectors / Plugs
Carbon Blast

$5,000 for a couple of gaskets, injection cleaning/service and a water pump/thermostat!
jeez! you can literally buy a high mileage working E46 330i or early year E90 335i with that money!

You can put that money as a down payment on a 2015 BMW M5!

About 5 years ago I purchased an X5 that needed around 24,000 in repairs (dealer prices). The car looked mint (body & interior) and the price of the car was extremely low (due to the issues). 2,400 $ and 3 weeks later she was like a puppy. Runs without any issues and wifey is very happy (her DD). SAV is mint now. The repairs on that one were more extensive and difficult than what you have to undergo, so the question that begs is this: do you want to keep this car? Do you like it without any doubts? If the answer is yes, you know what to do.

I plan to keep the car for the longhaul and have come up with a plan to address the issues. I am going to start with the topside issues first starting with the valve cover, walnut blast and injector(s). Then tackle the bottom issues next starting with the thermostat. After looking at the oil pan gasket DIY, I am going to outsource that to the mechanic for $1k. Not saying that I can't do it but it seems a bit more involved than I want to entertain.

I know right. Those were my thoughts as well. I realize you have to pay to play and I've played for the past 4 years and am at that point where this last surge will have this car in perfect order.

Sorry to hear! At 5k my car would not be on the dry dock it would be on the chopping block...

5k is like 10 vacation flights between the USA and Europe. It is a 2 week all expense paid Galapagos dream vacation.

5k is believable too because the local BMW dealership tried to bend me over for the Oil Filter Housing Gasket. They wanted $1303.09 and told me the labor included disassembly of the engine block. As if I didn't know the OFH sat right above the engine block and not inside the engine as they were trying to make me believe.

Ha Ha on the dream vacations! I am very lucky to have 3 cars and a wife that works from home. This would be an expensive and inconvenient proposition if this were my daily driver.

I think all those repairs are pretty reasonable DIY's with the exception of the oil pan gasket. My car has a slow drip from the oil pan that will probably never get fixed, because I don't want to drop the subframe and wrestle with it myself, and I'm not willing to pay for the indy to replace it. You can buy a lot of quarts of oil with $1500-$2000....

That's where my head is with the oil pan gasket. It's not a terrible leak. I add a quart of oil between oil changes and nothing ever reaches the driveway. The thermostat annoys me the most because the check engine light comes on but to be frank it's been on for about 3 years with no ill effects except it takes a while for the oil to heat up in the winter. I feel like it's time to get it right though.

Yeah, the T-stat is a better repair to invest time into, since it directly affects operating temp as you said. I bought my car used and figured it would leak a little oil, so the oil pan drip is not a surprise or concern for me.
