Clutch Advice

Hi Everyone,

My MMP Stage 3's will be here later this week and I'm in need of a new clutch before I get the install going! My power goals are in the 500-550whp range and I do not believe I will want more in the future.

My thoughts are either going with a MFactory or Spec SMFW and a 335is/550i clutch or just going all the way with a spec stage 2+ or 3+ clutch and spec SMFW. Which would you recommend? Do you think a 335is clutch will hold for my power range? Also, if I go with either clutch will I need any additional parts or bolts?

Thanks!

Would not recommend the 335is/550i clutch for this, won't be able to support the torque for long. If you put a lot of miles on the car I'd go spec 2+, but if not your daily, 3+

Cool, I think that's what I'll do. I appreciate the reply.

335is/550i clutch will work if you keep your torque low enough, but it won't last very long. At just under 600 wtq I got ~20k out of mine but it never liked launches. Fine for 3/4th gear pulls or roll racing. For those turbos, I'd go Spec 3+ or the Twin Disk.

Seen some bad reviews on Spec recently on the forums. Anyone use South Bend?

I just had install the Spec Stage 3+ w/ the Steel SMFW. Absolutely no complaints with this clutch. Clutch engagement is very predictable, always the same, and much better than my previous twindisk for DD and traffic driving.

Previously had the ClutchMaster FX850 twindisk kit and got faulted due to install error of a pin.

Apparently the pin that presses the flywheel differs with some N54 production models. Spec and Clutchmasters ship a smaller diameter pin size that does not keep the flywheel pressed for those production models that come with a larger pin. SO its best to use the original pin or get a new one specific to the car. The Installer needs to be aware of this. This shit will turn havoc easily then people start faulting the clutch kit.
