So subjective. He was in comfort too. Maybe they got flack from merc to show merc as superior so they rigged up a test. Carwow needs to make money too I guess.

Although to be fair the e class is faster on paper (7.3 vs 7.7s to 62mph). Also merc seems to have a less powerful engine as well. But I think both are cheaper than the Bmw...

Pretty sure the 540i will be faster or at least as fast with '61 bhp' less

My point with the subjectivity is that with subsecond differences in 0-60, it all comes down to reaction times, road surface traction (what tyres you have on) and to compound that with a rolling start where even the gearbox isn't in sport mode - like what's the point of the video?

If you are ticking the 2.0d box for whatever reason surely fractions of a second of speed are not top of your list ?
540 / 530d vs merc comparo much more relevant as more relevant to buyers.

Very good point. I can tell you from experience that the G30 520d feels quicker than the E220d with much less lag and a better gearbox.

Since this is a uk video it's also important to note the 520d doesn't come with sport auto transmission.

In context it's a good overall comparison. I still feel he's giving more kudos than necessary to the merc else the merc police will be after him.
Also the 520d is the only car with the non sport auto. All other g30s have the sport auto 'box - let alone the power in those engines...

I guess power matters less and less now. Like is it really important whether a car gets to 60 in 5 seconds or 6? Not really. In the real world handling, tech and comfort are more important...

If confort matters than Mercedes is the king. Personally i don't need that much confort , i'd rather have spotiness then confort. In my opinion the level of confort on e 60 is enough for me

You guys know that was a complete parody, right? The "very real" scenario he poses where 2 corporate blokes validate their existence through the battle of 2.0d's... and "he'd be devastated if that was his BMW"...
Oh nvm... but I will say if you bought your 520d to beat the 220d and this is a sad day for you there is a fundamental flaw in both your value system and competitive strategy. |

Well, maybe what you prefer and makes you happy to drive to work comes to mind... a drive to work that doesn't include some imaginary rolling start race to middle management glory. You make valid points about how people may value a car, and many are subjective, so I just don't agree with telling folks on here who just bought a 520d that its a sad day because Carwow says so.
