I think you either love them or hate them. I had a Volvo V70 Turbo AWD for about 10 years. I just loved the thing. It was comfortable, decent on fuel and could haul a ton of shit. And it wasn't an SUV, nothing against SUV's but not everyone wants one. FTR, when the engine grenaded on my wagon I replaced it with a small SUV as I couldn't find a wagon that fit the bill, the SUV is ok, but it drives more like a truck than the wagon and doesn't have nearly the same interior space. Just my two cents.

I would do the second definitely, maybe an occasional road trip during the summer.

It's not that I hate the X5M, but I'd take an M3/5 Touring over them every single day of the week.

I don't need AWD (I live in SC), but I do need the space (haul dogs, car parts ect ect)... Not to mention I prefer manuals.

Tourings would get better mileage, handle better while being cheaper ect ect...

So yes, that E34 Touring ad makes me drool

SUVs are nothing more then raised mini vans.

A wagon offers all the benefits of space needed but also retains a much sportier drive/feel.

I personally never understood the love for over sized SUVs unless you are one of the 12 guys who actually takes them off road

While I thought the E60 M5 was an abomination (except the engine...freaking angels singing), the E61 M5 looked fantastic...really wish they would've brought it to the USA. The Touring ///M is gone, with the exception of the ///M550d. Too bad... An F90 ///M5 Touring would be great and would give the E63-AMG Touring some competition on this side of the pond....heck, the ///M550d would give the E63 a run for its money, too.

I have to disagree here.
Minivans have ridiculous amount of space, compared to sedans, or sedan-derived SUVs.

I'm speaking from experience: among other cars, I own an Odyssey for major road trips and Home Depot runs. I can fit a 4x8" drywall and particle boards into that monster. That's more than any pickup truck or super-sized SUV could handle!

As to SUVs - I don't get them either.
Never owned one, and don't see buying one any time soon either.

I believe you, but there are just far too few of you in the US.

US premium wagon market has declined to sub 20K units/year.
Last year (2016), BMW NA sold 3,340 wagons in the US, so BMW holds ~15% of the very crowded luxury wagon market.

///M-cars sell at an average of 5% of the corresponding vehicle model.
So, BMW is forgoing an opportunity to maybe sell 167 ///M-wagons. That's not a market opportunity.
That's a money hole.

That's fine, and it makes perfect sense if you can only own one (1) and only one vehicle.
Which is why wagons are so popular in the income and parking space constrained Europe.

But in the US, 90+% of the population can afford to, and does manage to own multiple vehicles.

There is really no need to compromise on space, or handling by restricting yourself to just a wagon. And an ///M-wagon at that.
Get a proper ///M-car that will always handle better than a wagon, and a roomy commuter vehicle (diesel or electric), if you need the space!

I've had a lot of great BMWs. I have maybe 5 tied for my favorite. Among them is my 535ixT wagon. I would have loved an M5 wagon but the 535ixT was terrific.

I love this car but I can't help but think that whoever buys it may have difficulty with paperwork at some point. The post says it was properly federalized and otherwise documented to be registered in California. It has a federal compliance sticker and this California one:



Only problem is, this says 1995 BMW M5 with 3.6 liter motor. But the '92-'96 Euro-spec E34 M5 had the 3.8 liter S38B38 motor, which the listing also mentions.

So technically the California sticker pictured above is incorrect. It's only a minor detail and the car has been supposedly been successfully registered by multiple owners, but you never know if/when some DMV bureaucrat might decide to get picky about the details.

I love me some rare, pedigreed German wagon goodness, but $120,500?! Instead of a 997.2 GT3, or a new Carrera S, or a GT4 + E46 M3 daily, or decent examples of the first four generations of M3/M5? Or a Ferrari 360 + C5 Z06 track car + new Civic Sport Hatch daily? You could even realize that rap song that's like "Beemer Benz or Bentley". The Bimmer nerdism is strong here. I guess a few times a year he'll be one of the coolest guys at BMW meets (not hard to do)...

Crazy price, but I can relate to wanting something unusual. Personally, I'd rather put one together myself than pay for the unobtanium, especially when the performance from yesterday's high tech is now rather commonplace.

In a similar vein, anybody else check out the Griots Garage faux M-wagon? Added bonus is it is chock full of detailing goodies, so you never have to head home to the garage.
