Exclamation Pics of an E60 M5 pulling a large boat on a trailer

Saw this on the 285 in Atlanta.. he should've probably went with a regular 5 series so he could afford a SUV to pull this thing but I admire the effort.

Why I don't buy used vehicles. Never know the level of neglect and ignorance of the previous driver.

The E39 M5 was rated to tow just under 4,000 lbs. Not sure of the E60 M5 but I'd imagine it could be similar. Not so sure I'd do so with an SMG equipped car, though.

During our first Euro Delivery in 2011, we saw all kinds of BMWs towing various kinds of things. BMW used to offer an optional towing hitch on many models that folds back out of sight under the bumper. Germans love to go camping and it wasn't unusual to see 3 Series pulling a small camping trailer. We saw a 5 Series pulling a double horse trailer.

The E39 M5 also used a V8 with plenty of torque down low, not a high revving V10

I pulled 3 and 4 horse trailers for years.

Of course I did it with my duallies and a gooseneck set up. That's just nuts with the V-10 M5. The SMG tranny is very difficult just motivating the back wheels. I found it to be a deficient transmission in my M6. And the V-10 only generates about 390 lb ft of torque, which is what you get from an aspirated 5 liters. I can't imagine the strain on everything from a low torque high revving drivetrain. I wonder if he has trailer brakes. I suspect not.

Out of interest I perused google a bit. The US M5 doesn't have a tow rating, but in Europe its rated to tow up to 4600 lbs!

I'm sure there is more to the story on different bumpers, or under chassis requirements in the difference of the models. But I'm assuming the transmissions and motor are fairly similar, meaning the drive line is good to go.

Isn't there some joke about the definition of a boat being a big hole in the water that [some idiot] throws money into? I guess he felt he needed to double down on the cash burn. But these 'rigs' give me fits - hate to be anywhere near them at highway speed, knowing what the trailer wheel bearings probably look like after a decade of submersion at the dock, then neglect the other 10 months. When they lose a wheel, it gets real exciting, and this guy is probably ramming along at 75+ when not in traffic.
