Report: BMW to Raise Global Production Capacity 27% by 2020
BIMMERPOST NEWS Report: BMW to Raise Global Production Capacity 27% by 2020 Via Autonews May 9, 2017 FRANKFURT -- BMW AG plans to raise its annual production capacity by about 27 percent to 3 million vehicles by 2020 and plans to build its X5 offroader in China, German daily Handelsblatt said, citing company sources familiar with the plans. BMW Group, which includes the Mini and Rolls-Royce brands, built 2.37 million vehicles last year, plans to double its production capacity in China to 600,000 cars, Handelsblatt said. In North America and Mexico, production capacity will be increased to 750,000 vehicles from 410,000, the paper said, adding that BMW brand wants to overtake rival Mercedes-Benz, which is owned by Daimler, to reclaim the volume sales crown for premium carmakers. The newspaper said "going on the offensive" will be the message on Thursday from CEO Harald Krueger at BMW's annual shareholder meeting, as the automaker seeks to win back its "rightful" No. 1 spot. BMW declined to comment on the Handelsblatt report.

China is the new strategy. It will allow BMW to remain an independent company. (GM likes China, too, because the Chinese also love Buicks. Go figure.)
So BMW will be pumping out all manner of non ultimate driving machine cars. I, for one, don't mind, because that will allow BMW to stay alive and not become a brand of Hyundai Motor Group or Toyota Motor Corp. Mercedes-Benz's strategy has been to remain independent by making trucks in addition to cars, and that's kept them afloat. More power to BMW's Board.

I think BMW would stay alive regardless of being the number one volume seller or not. I think the main benefit for enthusiasts is more money for R&D and more chance of excellent models being released because there is a larger budget available.

Should mean a lid on price increases as other manufactures will respond and the market will be in oversupply.

Switzerland may not be the best example as the average income is on a higher level than most countrys but here BMW has been on second place of car sales in the last years. Eternal first beeing Volkswagen but much in front of most cheaper Brands. Followed by Mercedes and Audi.

Concerned that more mass production would lead to decrease in quality of materials/construction as BMW tries to drive costs down to stay competitive in a likely over saturated market.
