Goodbye to my M235i
This happened almost a month back, and I'm finally getting around to posting it.
I was driving home a few weeks ago on the freeway, and some small-ish animal (raccoon, possum, ?) darted out in front of my car and I hit it. There were cops everywhere that night, so I wasn't going more than 60 or 65 mph. Given the size and noise, I thought I had just ran over it, and continued driving along feeling a bit bummed about what I had just done. About a 1/4 mile down the highway, the low washer fluid warning came on. I've had that light come on before without touching anything, so I didn't think much of it. About 10 seconds later though, the low oil pressure light came on, and I realized what had happened. But before I could do anything, the car jolted with a loud bang and the engine died. I coasted over to the shoulder, pressed the ejector seat button, got the car towed to the dealership, and took an Uber home. The dealership called me the next morning to confirm my worst suspicions. Turns out the raccoon/possum/ninja had broke through the passenger side vent on the bumper and cracked the washer fluid and oil reservoirs. The oil drained out of the car on the freeway, and by the time the light came on, the engine seized. They tried turning the engine by hand, and said it wouldn't budge an inch. A week later, the insurance company came back and said that the repairs - with a new engine in the mix - would cost more than the car would be worth after the repairs, noting that it's the strangest total loss that they've ever seen. I uploaded some pics View post on imgur.com from the dealership when I went to collect my personal items from the car.For anyone driving on I-90 EB in WA, look for a giant oil stain on the shoulder right before mile marker 16. My lease was going to be up in October anyway, but I was hoping for a few more months with this car. RIP 2015 M235i. |

Wow, I'm absolutely shocked it would cost that much for a new engine. How many miles on the car? Did they mention the amount of the repair estimate?

Per getBMWparts.com, an assembled motor is $16,500 and a turbocharger assembly $2,500. Pretty laughable, IMO.
What I did find interesting is that the M2 is listed as sharing the same engine block as the 2014+ M235. That means the M2 does not have a closed deck block as originally stated by BMW (which they subsequently have removed from the most recent literature). |

How does that even work on a lease? How do they compensate you on a lease. The insurance company has to pay you something. But you are terminating your lease early.

That sucks. It's a bit surprising that the idiot light came on so late.

Like BEM-S4 said, you pretty much just walk away. I wonder if/when I get my MSDs back though... |

Sounds like a good ad for Farmers Insurance, they have all the ads that sound like this story.

From the two photos it doesn't look like much damage.

I got numbers from the insurance companies for those that were interested:
Estimated cost to repair: 24k Current value: 31,594 Repair to limit: 22k Basically, since 24 > 22, the car is a total loss. |

I had a total loss in a VW, and lease as well. In my case, I had "msrp replacement value" which meant I got back my payments less texes and extras. Without it, I'd have lost everything..
Sometimes these things can be a blessing, others not so much. Hope you find a suitable replacement, D |
