Chassis Restriction Warning

me again. m240 (with 300 miles) is at the shop to investigate the chassis restriction warning light.

they're telling me the trunk sensors got wet...i don't know where they are but the guy is basically saying "i'm doubtful that you spilled a gallon of water in your trunk"....

wtf? probably need new sensors (don't know which ones) but i am boiling at the moment.

What does the trunk sensor have to do with a chassis restriction warning? If anything, I'd guess it's a sensor on the Adaptive M suspension.

great question. i don't know the details but the foreman saw corrosion in a sensor that was underneath my trunk mat (along with about a gallon of standing water in one of the cubby holes). they need to investigate the flooding source first and then determine whether that sensor (i still don't know what sensor it is) could have shorted and caused the chassis malfunction code.

the fact that they said it will "probably" be covered under warranty threw me into a tantrum. something along the lines of "do you really think i'm transporting barrels of water in my 2 week old car" - hint: i'm not.

nothing has been in the trunk but for golf clubs and baseball gear. i've never had any water issues with rain and parking the car outside. they think a tail light or something else could have caused it but we shall see.

How about if they fully investigate the possibility that someone left the trunk of you car open in the rain at some point before you took delivery?

Oh man would I be upset as this could cause rust issues down the road...

Billy,

Did you take it back to the selling dealer or possibly Rockville? If Rockville, let me know because a friend of mine works there as an SA.

I did not, it would be inconvenient for me to have to bring it to Silver Spring for service since I live in DC, so Fairfax is my closest service garage and it has the least worst reputation out of all the other service garages is in the area as far as I can tell.

Where did the water end up, so I can just check to be sure mine isn't leaking (I figure this wasn't obvious to you initially, so hidden down under s/t?

Is your car garaged, or do you park on the street?

lift up trunk mat and look to the right cubby
hole area where the computer and other sensors sit.

was street parked for 2 weeks while waiting to move to my new apartment where i have a garage...

the car literally needs to survive two weeks on the street and it didn't. note that my 228 was street parked for 1 year on the same street without incident.

final update - the water leak source was actually the gas tank area if you can believe it. they sourced it back to an incorrect installation of the gas cap/gas tank door area.

BMW Fairfax fixed it up in two days with no charge to me.
