Deep Scratch: Thoughts on reasonable repair cost?

My son did this today... to the front driver side panel... I have a couple appointments at body shops, but I just moved to a new state, so going purely on reviews.

Any thoughts? I had a mobile guy look at it via text and he stated he would have it repainted, not repaired.

It's the front quarter panel above the wheel - not the front bumper area. I was thinking around a grand... PITA.

the $1000 figure might be high, maybe $600-700, but if you need a rental for a few days figure about $1000 total.

Guessing 800 to 1000 for blend to match well, and for grey you'd want to.

Look in this post for some options, they won't be good as total repaint but you may can hind it some.

It's about $500 per panel to paint or blend in. I paid about $2k for front fender scratch with fender itself done at one of the best shops around

do you think in some ways a new panel is easier?

new: clean, prime, paint, correction, remove install fender

scratched fender: remove paint or smooth prep damage area, prime, paint, correction, tape and mask area.

I had deep scratch, plus 2s have steel fenders which are harder to fix then aluminum so they ended up replacing it. Then I was told I MUST blend in hood and door panel

Sucks but they call them accidents for a reason...

Do not always need to blend paint unless it is faded or they suck at color matching.

They can use the gas cover to nail the color.

Find a good shop and you are golden.

Let me guess, Bicycle?

I went to like 5 bodyshops and all told me to blend in because even unfaded paint will not match since it's not the same batch as original. 1 shop even refused to do it, said they don't have special paint that BMW uses.

This is on mineral grey by the way, some other colors are much easier to deal with

Local Maaco was the only one who was going to try without blending in but didn't guarantee anything. They quoted about $600-700

Gotcha.

Regardless I'd never use Maaco on a BMW.

They are independently owned shops, one next to my home had good reviews, seemed honest too. I almost gave them my car when another small shop that refused to do it, told me to only take it high end bodyshop.

I'd stay away from Maaco.

The cheap comes out expensive.

A BMW does belong in a shop like that.

I don't understand what makes this so complicated? Wouldn't it basically be sand, paint, blend? Isn't the trickiest part getting the color match?

What makes a high end shop so much better at color match?

I'm asking because it's just a scratch.. If there were body damage, I'd be more worried.... but it's just paint.

Scratch or minor body damage, it doesn't matter. I guess color matching depends on the skill and the paint used. I was told small shops use Dupont paint while highend shops use oem Glasurit. I am not a pro so I am guessing you can blendin Dupont to color match as well. All I know is that it will look like shit if paint won't match Everyone told me Metallic/Mineral Grey is a bitch to match so I didn't want to take my chances. I am happy with my end result, looks better then before )) previous small scratches are gone

Most shops will probably tell you to blend in door and trunk in OP case

I had a similar deep scratch on the X3's drivers door. Cost me $800 and it looked great. Had to blend it. Don't take it to Maaco.
