RTV Burn Off
Hi guys. I recently picked up some permatex ultra copper rtv and applied it somewhat liberally to my valve cover gasket when I reinstalled it in order to hold it on. When i started the car up it ran ok (a bit rough due to misfire) but there was gray-ish smoke (not white so I don't think it's residual oil) coming from behind the engine and it smelled metallic. I have no clue what it could be since I replaced the eccentric shaft sensor and nothing really burns up there.
My question is: Is it possible for high temp copper RTV to have some residual burn off after its recently been applied? Or am I missing something since its rated to 700 degrees F? Any help would be appreciated since I'm scared I'm about to grenade my engine if I keep starting it. |

What I think happened is some of the permatex fell onto the exhaust manifold and is burning off, since that's pretty much the only place hot enough to exceed its temperature rating. Drove the car 3 hours today and no smoke so I think it was just that.
