radar detector
Recently I've been looking into police radar detectors. Big names like passport and valentine's are the ones people are going for. Which one is the best one and why do you use it for? One reason why i would want one is to save money on tickets. I know detectors are legal in most states, but if i encounter a situation if a cop asks why i have a radar what would you guys usually say?

Someone on this forum built a custom, concealed mount for detector in what used to be the ashtray. It was pretty slick. |

I would stick with the V1, still the best in the market.

That has not been true for years..
Escort 360 has much better junk filtering than V1 and now it has the dumb arrows. Redline has the best range and UNIDEN R3 is best all around. Oh and if the the OP wants something to cut down on tickets the Passport will pay any tickets he gets for so many years. |

The Valentine V1 has been out of date for some time now and tends to throw false alarms with all the traffic flow sensors on the highway these days (like the old 8500xi X50). Any GPS Radar will help you filter those out and most new ones w/o GPS still do a pretty good job filtering.
Either the passport Escort 9500ix, which has been a mainstay in GPS Radar Detectors, or the new and improved Escort IX which is its successor however I can't speak from experience on that one. If you don't care for GPS in your Radar, I would go with the Escort X80 which is the successor to the 8500ix X50 (the radar of choice for a very long time).

I think the new escorts allow you to filter frequency ranges of the bands, not just the whole band(like older detectors). Why would that be beneficial? Because all this god damn adaptive cruise control and lane monitor crap uses x-band. And yes, there are a few x-band devices still in use in my area.
I have filtered the x-band in the past, but it worries the hell out of me when I do. |

To be fair V1 does have this type of filtering on their latest updates but its not as good as escort. V1 might have more range but what good is range with all of those false alarms. If I was going to buy a new radar detector today I would buy Uniden. |

Uniden R3 is the best hands down now. It was recently released and demand is so high it is back ordered at most vendors.

I have a Beltronics Pro 200. I've been pretty happy with it. Decent price and it will pick up a cop before I can even see him on the highway. One thing I'd like to have is the GPS feature. That lets you memorize and block flase signals in common areas like automatic doors and stuff around town.

Thanks for that advise- being from a different country where x band is, while limited, indeed still in use.
And I suppose most of the automotive stuff that causes falses is k band now that I think of it... It is just that all the X and K band falses are beginning to blend... but thankfully once out on the open highways(where I do most of my serious speeding) typical traffic is light and I am away from lots of commercial false sources... |

My uniden dfr7 has saved me so many times, havent been pulled over since I bought it, even driven through multiple DUI checkpoints and my blendmount does nothing to hide it, have never gotten comments from cops and I know they see it. Its legal to have one bit not legal to mount on a windshield in cali so gotta keep that in mind if the cops wanna be tough.

I use the V1 with the android bt adapter and yav1 app. This allows you to fine tune to unit and add features comparable to escort since it can use your phones gps for speed and filtering. I have not tested escorts but it's almost twice as much. You can also call V1 and get a returned unit for 10% off but I think they are just new units if they don't have a return in stock. Mine seemed brand new when I went this route and saved 40 bucks.
I'm in Florida where they are legal. Been pulled over a few times in my life, not one cop has ever mentioned it. I also hard wire mine in up top of window so maybe they don't see it especially if I flip visor. With that being said if I was asked I just wouldn't answer or just move the conversation on like they didn't say anything. None of their business just like when they ask where I'm coming from it's none of their business |

I forgot to mention, when that cop gave me a ticket using x-band he first asked if I was on cruise control and I was like no, then he pointed at my radar detector and asked if it went off I was like no then the conversation moved on lol

Here's a good cheap one that I personally use in my car: https://www.amazon.com/Beltronics-V1.../dp/B00ADIJBD6
It's no-frills. Literally has four buttons, no GPS, no directional tracking for the radar signal, nothing like that. I believe it is a re-branded version of an older Escort model that was highly respected by the RD community for a long time. There is better stuff out there, but if you want a straight up radar detector and nothing else, you can't go wrong for the money.
