Brake noise when backing up
I am really enjoying my 230i equipped with M Performance Brake.
However, whenever after I drive over 10 to 15km, trying to back up for park, grinding noise from brake annoys me. I never have heard the noise when I drive forward. You guys have any experience like this? |

My M-Sport brakes do it whenever the rotors are cold.. forward or reverse. It's not bad and I only hear it when I don't have the music on, and the windows are down.

Ha. Same here and thought it was only on mine. Does it most of the time only when backing up; ever since I picked it from the dealership. m235i. Never really bugged me but good to know it's a common thing.

When it is cold, I never hear noise. After running like 15 to 20km -that means it is hot- I always hear the noise when I back up.. |

I may be far reaching but could there be dust stuck between the caliper and the disc that causes these sounds? When I was ordering my car my dealer advised me to not equip it with M Performance Brakes as these would cause this annoying noise and would only work when they are hot, that's why I went for the M Sport brakes as these are a nice compromise between the standard ones and the track focused ones.

I would confirm the noise is from the disc brake pads vs the parking brake shoes due to corrosion between the shoes and rotor hat. Follow the procedure in the manual for cleaning off the parking brake shoes and see if the noise changes or disappears.

This is a very common and Standard thing on any BMW car with performance brakes.
It is normal for the brakes to make noise from time to time as they are a performance brake and are made to perform very well.. But if you are very concerned about it... you can take it to your dealer and they will usually try chamfering the brake pads to help get rid of the noise...or put in a different brake pad.. The newer pads do not perform as well but they dont noise. Me personally.. a little brake noise never bothered me..if its constant squealing or grinding every second you touch the pedal..then you have an issue. Thanks, Taunto, for a definitive response.
This topic comes up about every six months and engenders the same discussion. Given such a wonderfully informative answer, I vote that we put it to bed and BAN IT FROM THE FORUM FOREVER. I know, it's early in the morning. |

I agree with this and yet, the //M performance brakes went, "screeee...scereee...screeee....." as I backed out of the driveway this morning..
But again, I washed it yesterday afternoon after a, "spirited jaunt", so it rusts up immediately with the water and the PH change in the soap. All I can say is that it goes well with the leather smell and the exhaust in the morning as it warms up with the windows down.. You barely hear it.. |
