Twisted the head off a bolt holding motor mount to subframe :(

Hi guys,

Just want a little advice if possible. I'm taking the turbo-side motor mount off to gain access to the turbos. I've undone the centre top nut on the mount, went underneath, supported the engine weight with a scissor jack and wood via the sump, and started unbolting one of the two bolts (E12) holding the motor mount onto the subframe. They're both very stiff, and one of them i've managed to twist the head off yikes.

Are these bolts usually that stiff?? Am I doing something wrong? Also, as I'm undoing them, the bolts aren't coming through towards me. I recon I'll be able to sort this bolt out once i've got the mount out but i've never done this before so any advice is appreciated!!!!

Dan

Hit them with a good penetrate first, let it sit about 10 minutes then hit again. I like to give the breaker bar a few good smacks with a stiff mallet, shock loads are much better at breaking things loose than a straight twisting torque.

These are the buggers I'm talking about. Okay, cool, so these guys are usually very stiff? If so, then I don't mind continuing my work!

About to change my turbos right know and had the same problem with the bolts. Got them out without braking them and saw that the top off the bolts were bent so they destroyed the threads in the engine mounts on the way out so must buy new mounts. Probably time for new ones anyway with 8000miles on the car. If you look closely on yours they probably are bent also. Do not know why thou, probably the twisting motion of the engine during heavy load

I haven't removed that particular fastener yet, but if it's original hardware it's probably a little siezed. If you have an impact try that, either way use plenty of penetratant.

Not sure how experienced you are, but the feeling of a failed fastener is significantly different from one that's breaking loose.

Edit: if your going this far you may as well replace the mounts and hardware. Their a known to cause major engine damage when worn.

Edit2: also be careful lifting the engine by the pan, it's aluminum and cracks extremely easy, they are not cheap. Proper way to do it is an engine support that goes over the fender walls or an engine hoist.

It's corrosion and is very common. If just the head snaps, you can pull the mount exposing the bolt. Then, you would have to move it back and fourth with a pipe wrench till it loosens, use penetrating oil for lubricantion. Be patient, it will come out. Heat will be the best option for this if it's available to you. If it breaks clean,,then you would have to drill and tap, it's easier for aluminum than steel. Hope this helps.

Soak in Kroil Oil overnight.

If it still doesn't move, use a torch with yellow gas. It will move.

Just for thread completion, I fixed this guys - I took the mount off completely, drilled out the stuck screw, and put a bolt through the wider hole. Not ideal but it's very secure.

Thanks for the replies =]

That's no fun...perfect excuse to upgrade mounts in this case.

Glad you were able to make it work though

I just replaced my turbos and the first thing i did was soak all bolts in Kroil oil. They all came off like butter.
