335i N54 Swap to 335is N54

I'm in the market to engine swap my N54 production date 10/2008 for another N54. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like any N54 up to 01/2009 is fair game (135i, 335i, 535i), but how would fitment work if I were to swap an 335is N54?

Also, does transmission matter?

I think the 335is came with a DCT transmission so unless your car is an manual it would be a lot of work.

The 335is engine is exactly the same as any other N54 from 02/2009 onwards. No differece whatsoever.

My current car's production date is 10/2008, so wouldn't that be an issue?

An engine is different from a transmission. You simply unbolt the DCT (if it came with one) and install your 6MT.

That said, if you have a spare DCT... let me know

You can still easily install a newer n54 into your car - as long as you also get the newer version flywheel. The one that you have now is an 8-bolt and you'll need to get a 6-bolt one. Aside from that, everything else will bolt up.

Is engines ( n54 t as opposed to o) have an additional radiator and high output cooling fan. Not sure how the ecm will deal with that if not in place.

Would you need to swap the ecm ?
Wouldn't it just matter that the mechanical pieces transfer over ?

generally yes but these things rarely go as planned. Will prob dealing with codes. ECM will at least need to be recoded to new vin.

The motors are identical for IS and I models - there is no coding needed. The added cooling is there to reduce the stress on the motor caused by the programming of the IS DME. If you're not swapping the IS DME into your car along with the engine, there is no coding to be done - just make sure you have a 6-bolt flywheel and you're good to go. The DME can't tell a difference between a 6-bolt and 8-bolt crank. The internal components are also slightly different - pistons, rings, etc. but those are all mechanical parts and there is no way for the DME to distinguish between them.

I think the flash roms have to be associated in the DME have reference to a specific VIN.. but Ill let someone else find the thread.. bc Iv never done a motor swap. I know I recall someone had to get the roms rewritten after DME swap.

I'm confused now with all these DME/ECM opinions, hopefully its not an issue if I use my current DME.

Will my Spec Stg 2+ clutch ('07-'10) fit to the 6 bolt flywheel or will I need a new clutch?

I don't even know why the DME question came up - if you're keeping your DME then there is no issue. No programming needed.

That depends on what type of clutch you have and the flywheel that you get. Is the clutch designed to work with Spec specific flywheel or stock type flywheel? Just get the 6-bolt that is specific to the type of clutch that you have.

There is only 1 difference among the mechanical part of all N54 long blocks, a 6 or 8 bolt flywheel. Everything else is exactly the same.
Even if you have an older model, you might have an 8 bolt pattern. My Aug 2007 build has an 8 bolt pattern. My understanding is that BMW made a hard switch to 8 bolts in Feb 2009, though it's been reported that some Jan 2009 builds still had 6 bolts.
