335i owners, has this ever happened to you before?
First let me mention that my 335i is completely bone stock. So i recently came back from track yestarday and i found out my car can only handle 3 laps before my check engine light comes on and my car losses all boost. So after that i turned my car off and let it cool down for roughly 5-10min. after that i started it and it seemed to be ok again, so i took it back onto the track and same thing happed. After 3 laps check engine light comes on then no boost. this happened 3 times.......
so whats the deal with my car? |

What are the details on your car? Do you have the stock oil cooler?

they are asking if you have the pure stock oil cooler located in your passenger wheel well. It will be in the front of the wheel well and will have slats to let air pass through it. If you dont have this, your oil temps are getting way too high too quickly and the car pulls back the reigns.
Were you monitoring your oil temps while on the track?

Is it a 6MT or a Steptronic? The steptronics are notorious for overheating coolant.
If you don't have an oil cooler, both the 6MT and Step will have issues with oil temps. |

Search for "limp mode" and read the oil cooler retrofit sticky under the general forum

I thought that when tracking 335i, you need to be running 94 or higher Octane to be free of any limp modes...
also 0w-40 or 10w-40 oils will keep heat lower then bmw brand 5w-30 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=136963

I just took my JB2 car to the track and the oil temp never went about 255. The outside temps was 89 degrees. I agree with Left take the car to the dealer and see waht they have to say. One more thing were you holding high RPM all the time when you were runing?

Not at the track, but I drove the car hard on the street for 40 minutes, at 104 degrees air temp last year, and stayed at 245-250, no limps at all. 6MT with Oil cooler. (93 Octane Shell v-power)

Damn, that is unusual I think for a 335i with a stock oil cooler. Still, if you are going to track your car I would look into upgrading those cooling parts of the turbo to be safe down the road.

Especially stock, anything greater than 91 octane is unnecessary. I ran 91 octane on Procede V2 and didn't get any limps....in 90 degree ambients.
Go to your dealer. Tell him it was a DRIVING SCHOOL, otherwise you'll get warranty yanked for racing. The 335i runs hot on track, no question about it. STock or Procede, if the ambients are hot enough (anything over 85), I can EASILY get the oil temps up to 285-295. It really depends on how you drive it. Beginner or intermediate groups should be OK. Advanced or instructor level will start sweating. I will try S4to335's experiment running the Castrol 10w60. |
