08 VW GTI MkV
Anyone have first hand experience with this car that can give me a review?
Been looking at the 08 Civic Si but the GTI sounds a bit appealing now.

I have driven it, fun car! I think they have improved on their reliability, great engine. I did own an 06 Si and loved that, now I'm moving on to a Mini Cooper S. Take that out for a drive if you could live with the size..total blast!

I got my 2008 GTI in Aug of 07. I initially went to the dealer to pick up a good deal on remaining 07's. They were all gone. At least the ones I wanted.
They gave me a 2008 at about $2k off sticker, which I thought was not bad for a new model year. I now have about 4k miles on the car. I love it. I get about 25-35MPG. The 200HP engine is really nice. I love the 6 speed tranny. Only one issue. The left front strut was making a noise. they replaced under warranty. other than that the car has be perfect. I am amazed how much room it has. 4 large adults can fit in the thing without issue. (I have the 2 door hatch). For $22k, and all the standard features, plus Sirius sat radio, I think this is one of the best deals on the market.

A friend of mine has a 2008 r32, he loves it in every way and came from a 2003 gti. He misses the boost but loves the AWD.
He does go on and on about how great the new 2.0T engine is and how great the new GTI's are but I haven't personally been in one or driven one.

We did a few runs from a stop, just blasts from 0-100mph and each time (even after he timed his launch control properly) I would just walk away from his car and end up with over 5-6 car lenghts on him by 100. It's comfortable, handles nicely, but underpowered IMO. Now if they twin turbo'd that beast...it would be a whole different story

Enough of the comparisons, lets talk about living with the thing. As with every VAG product it incredibly easy to live with, I have had two and neither one has been to the shop apart from services. The economy is again incredible for a car with this type of performance, my wife who does mostly town driving and is a little heavy on the right foot gets an average of 32mpg and on a motorway run @ 80mph it will get closer to 38mpg. The steering wheel is lovely to hold and the flat bottom makes it all the more special. The seat grips well and are very comfortable, the heated seat provides good base and back heat without burning the hoop. The space in the rear is miles better than my S5 and better than an M3 as well. Options are cheap compared to BMW and the car has a more up market feel than almost everything else in it's price bracket, though it's not an Audi or a BMW. Performance, it will run with a 330i, well up to 120mph anyway. And I believe it will top out on the speedo at 155mph, at bit optimistic but I believe a true 145mph is there for the taking. Paint work is as good as any of the top brands and though some of the materials don't have the soft feel of an Audi or BMW, the fit and execution is every bit as good. All round it's one hell of a car for the little cash being asked for it and I personally would pick it over a 130i, R32, S3, Civic Type R, the list goes on. Hope this gives you food for thought. |

I was seriously thinking of getting/waiting for the GTI before I got my 325i.
For the money...I would say the GTI is a better buy than either 325i or 328i. It is a very nice car. Steering wheel feels a little cheap and little too light for my taste...but what a nice car to drive! Cosmetically, I prefer the five door hatch over the 3 door. I also think the GTI comes from the factory sitting too high (in part due to federal crash regulations the NA GTI sits is higher than the Euro GTI). I would definately get aftermarket suspension...and maybe some 18" RS4 replicas. They look so nice on VWs... |
