I'm looking to see what options I have once winter comes. I have the standard 19in wheels with summer run flats. For winter I plan to get all seasons non run flats and a spare. Where is a good place to buy a spare tire kit ? And what is the minimum diameter I need ?
Thanks in advance for feedback. |

Guess that would depend on whether or not you want a full-sized spare or a compact. If it's a compact you want, check with your dealer for their price. I ordered non-run flat 20" for my car and when you do so, it comes with a compact spare stored under the trunk floor. Another option would be a 12v air compressor and a plug kit. That's what I carried in my X1 during the winter when I had my non-run flat snows mounted. Of course the plug kit wouldn't be much help if you happened to blow out or cut the sidewall of the tire, but most flats are something that penetrates the treaded portion, not the sidewall.

In Canada we get the 20" and non run flats with a tire repair kit (can of goop I call it). There is no spare even though they are non run flats (the F-Type was the same way). So why not go that route and forget the spare?

I have RFT but also have a Mobility Kit. I did not want to take the hit on trunk space. Belt and suspenders I suppose. Am I being silly?

I browsed TireRack and they have Michelin runflats mxm4 zp in one aspect size larger
Front 245/45/19( oem is 245/40/19) Rear 275/40/19 (275/35/19) does anyone know if the extra height and circumference will cause any problems ? Cost wise it's about the same if I buy 4 non runflats and a full size spare. |

3.6% difference. might be ok for a temp spare but could cause issues with xdrive or DSC |

i am probably paranoid but on my long road trips i keep a full size spare in trunk or back seat along with a can fix a flat, with a compressor and jack. if i got a flat and had to get towed, i would lose a day of vacation and it would ruin the itinerary. plus there’s no way any tire place would stock the tire i have. so i would have to buy a tire on the road and then a real replacement at home. add in towing costs, hotel cancellation fees, ... easier and cheaper to have a full size spare.

There is an original spare tyre option from factory.
It is absolutely hideus and raises the trunk flor quite a bit. It has been discussed some where in this forum in another thread. My recommendation is just to satisfy with small repair kit. Last edited by PeterGriffin; 07-17-2018 at 10:48 AM.. Reason: Misspelled |

Lots of tyre depots won't repair a tyre if it's been sealed with goop (in the UK at least) as they can't guarantee it wont weaken the repair. Also there's a chance (read it somewhere in the BMW literature) that the goop could damage the TPMS so all in all there's a chance of a hefty bill just for a simple puncture.
I stick with run flats but I accept that the chance of picking one up ex-stock in a tyre depot is pretty remote if it's a write off. I believe they can be repaired as for a normal tyre but there's the chance that running flat will have damaged the sidewalls. |
