Golfers and/or enthusiasts......

Any good online communities/forums?

and.. (killing 2 birds w/ one stone)

Your personal recommendations for woods/irons? Better yet, what do you currently carry in your bag (brand, model) and what would you have wanted instead?

I've used forged Mizuno MP32s for 3 years and love them to death. If you're not a 15 or lower HC, go with the MP60s by Mizuno. M makes real players' clubs.

I am not a serious golfer and would really use anything, but I prefer Cobra. I have used Cobra Irons for the past 5 years, and love them!

this thread will get moved to the general talk section pretty soon. lol

as far as to what irons/drivers, it depends on how serious you are. Yes you can buy a whole set for a couple hundred bucks at costco, but if you continue to play and improve you'll soon realize how crappy they are. As far as irons, get a cavity back set. Which brand and model? Go to the golf store and hit a few balls using different ones. A couple factors is your lie and your swing speed. Then there's the aesthetics of it. Then there's cost as well. www.tgw.com has very competitive prices and you can save on tax depending on where you live. good luck

Your personal recommendations for woods/irons? Edumacate me, please and thank you.
Buying clubs is like buying cars, so you're in luck.

Step 1: Realize that the most important club in your bag is your putter. If you can't putt, you'll never be a great golfer. Find a putter you like and stick with it for life.

Step 2: Go to the store and pick out 4-5 iron sets that you like the look and feel of that are also within your budget. Address balls, swing them around, see how much they weigh, etc. If you don't like how the club looks at address and feels in your hand, put it back and move on. Sounds silly, I know, but trust me--looks inspire confidence, and confidence leads to better golf.

Step 3: Hit the irons you picked out, all the way from 3-PW. Doing this in a simulator is great, but into a net works in a pinch. Choose the one that feels best when you make contact (also the one that inspires the most confidence). Brand really doesn't matter--Mizuno, Titleist, Callaway, Ping, Cleveland, TaylorMade, Nike, and Cobra all make great clubs. You can work out shaft length, flex, loft and lie angles, and grip size from there. Don't get graphite shafts unless you're a senior.

Step 4: Repeat steps 2-3 for drivers, except don't spend more than $200 and don't get this year's model. There are lots of cosmetic mods each year, but none change the performance of the club that much. Low MOI, moveable weights, square heads, and "draw" clubs are all gimmicks IMHO. Unlike with irons, driver shafts matter. Have the store measure your swing speed and get you set up with a shaft flex that fits it.

Step 5: Fill in the holes in your bag with wedges, hybrids, and fairways in that order. I carry a putter, a driver, 4-9 irons, 4 wedges, a 3W and a 4H.

golfwrx.com is a pretty good forum. You can't go wrong with Mizuno's for irons. Get the ones that fit your handicap.

ebay is probably the best bet. as a fellow lefty it's a pita to find a good selection at the golf store. however I did find my r7 460 off of craigslist from a local shop that was selling their demo driver. Had a few knicks, but other than that it was in perfect condition. Bought it for half the price of a new one at that time.

Was in Dicks sporting goods last weekend before my company tourney. Scored a floor model driver for about $80. Best driver I have used, and I was hitting them long and straight that day surprisingly

Adams Driver. Works great for what I need. Felt like new

I've played powerbilt irons for 20 years. Great clubs, great price. I actually played a rental set of them on a Hawaii vacation and just loved them. You can find full iron sets with graphite shafts on ebay for like $200. The grips kinda suck but they are a great deal. Driver is a Cleveland Launcher 400 with an Aldila NV 75 X-Stiff shaft. Cleveland fairway woods. I'm about a 12 hcap.

My first couple sets way back when were Cougar...not sure they make those anymore. My cousin worked at Yonex for a while so I got a couple sets of those two. Never like them that much.

Oh. ..and an Odyssey Two Ball Putter.

Bag fits pretty good sideways in the E92 but you will have to take out the drivers. And yes..this thread is gonna get moved soon

I like the callaway big bertha irons. They are very forgiving. I use oobgolf.com for a free handicap tracker. They have forums, but i've never been on them.

I play two different sets.

Favored set by far:
Mizuno MX-25 gap wedge through 4 iron (True Temper Dynalite Gold Shafts - S300 stiff)

Mizuno MP R Wedge 60 Degree (lob wedge) (True Temper Dynalite Gold - Wedge Flex)

Mizuno MX-560 Driver 10.5 degree loft (Mizuno Exsar DS3 Graphite Shaft - stiff)

Mizuno F-60 Fairway Wood -3 & 5 (Mizuno Exsar FS3 Graphite Shaft - stiff)

Mizuno CLK Fli-Hi Wood Hybrid 23 Degree (Mizuno Exsar HS2 Shaft - stiff)

Odyssey 3 Ball Putter (love this putter, it's easy to maintain the correct speed and follow through)

My other set are Ping i3 Oversize (full iron set) Ping G5 Driver, Ping Hyrbrids and a Callaway Tuttle Putter. Nice set, but nothing compared to the Mizuno's.

The Mizuno's are a Grain Flow Forged club...this means they are taken from a pure select mild carbon steel billet, formed to follow from the club to the hozzle and actually forged, heat treated and then forged two more times before finally being machined. This provides a club unlike any "cast" club...there are no voids, air pockets or imperfections within the mass of the club. They provide the ultimate in soft, solid and consistent feel.

These clubs to say the least are extremely forgiving and play well for experienced golfers as well mid to high handicap golfers. They are not a blade, but the only reason to play a blade these days is if you're just that GOOD or a have an ego like most people driving a BMW...LOL. I favor the forgiveness of a good cavity back iron like the Mizuno MX-25's, I like lower scores more than impressing my friends with a blade. I grew up playing blades, but my game isn't what it was when I was in high school and college...I guess I just don't play enough (average around three times a week).

My MX-560 Driver is incredible...it has an inspiring hardcore "ting" when you hit it...and even mishits tend to find there way down the fairway instead of the rough or worse...distance is no problem either...I can crush it past 300 yards with this club with little trouble. My Ping G5 does not have the same forgiveness at all...hit it perfect or reap the disaster. I can play a round of golf today with one or two balls...these Mizuno's have kept the ball straight 85-90 percent of the time.

I would have liked to try the Mizuno MX-950's but they aren't available in lefthanded clubs...I hit lefthanded so it's my loss!! If I could I would have bought them as I have heard they are more forgiving than the MX-25's. Both my father and father-in-law play the Mizuno MX-25's (my gift to them) and love them. My wife plays Mizuno Sora's and loves them to death. Listen, Mizuno isn't the number one club on the PGA Tour by accident. Unless you're sponsored and getting paid to play another club you're going to go with the clubs that put you at the top...Mizuno has proven time and time again to do that. They make a club for every style of golfer with just about any handicap. You can even mix and match the clubs to your game...you can order some blades and cavity backs...whatever you want.

I strongly suggest you look into these clubs. I have spoken with quite a few people from Mizuno and have been very impressed with every encounter. You can do a YouTube search and learn even more with some impressive videos out of both Europe and the USA. Check them out and have a blast. These may possibly be the last clubs you ever need to buy!! Oh and if you're serious about lowering your scores I suggest getting to know your clubs well...the distance you hit them and how far they carry once the ball lands in various conditions...then get yourself a Bushnell Rangefinder and you will drop strokes from your score by hitting more greens and avoiding more hazards by knowing your exact distance to the object or green. Have a good time!!
