I'll see you at the Auto cross!

I think you can rent/borrow a helmet at the event. I'm not positive. If you want your own, I bought mine from JMC over by the Cheetahs. Cool guys that know lots. They'll help you.

Man, to get all your questions answered, show up to Miramar Speed Circuit tonight at 6:30. SD BMWCCA event. Someone there should know.

I do want my own helmet mostly due to how sweaty and nasty those rental helmets can get !!

the dudes at JMC have car race helmets. I think you can get by with a motorcycle helmet if you want. To pass tech, they look for the little sticker inside the helmet. The basic thing is, if your helmet is more than 10 years old, it won't pass tech. The lighter weight the helmet, the more comfortable. And, the more expensive.

Miramar Speed Circuit just got a ton of new helmets, plus they give you a headsock to wear. The only thing i hate about that place is that its indoors and fumes make me pretty nauseous after few laps....

I also have a couple of questions

1. What kind of helmet do I need and where can I get a good deal on one?
2. The registration for Button willow asks for insurance info, what do they need that for
and do they inform your insurance company that you're tracking your car?
3. Does my insurance cover me on the track? I have Safeco (soon to become Liberty Mutual who is buying out Safeco)
4. Where is a reasonable place to stay near Button Willow ?

Thanks guys, and hope to see some of you out there
1) Type of helmet depends on the organization you are running with. I never ran with BMWCCA before but i assume you need a helmet that is rated SA2000 or up. Make sure to go and physically try on the helmet before you impulse buy one online because size is a huge factor.
2) never ran with BMWCCA so im not sure why they would need this
3) Insurance Coverage is all up to your policy. GENERALLY insurance tends to cover Driving Schools. But they have a strict policy where if it is a timed event or a type of competitive racing event, you are not covered. Be aware that a guy on e90post recently totalled his car on the track. He has called his insurance agent several times before the incident and they confirmed that he is covered for any accidents on the track. But now that he got into a accident, his agent from State Farm is completely denying that he was ever covered and is asking him to fork up the money to pay for the repairs. So i encourage you to call and find out what your policy states and try and get it in writing.
4) There are plenty of hotels/motels around there. But i'd probably try to stay at one of the more populated cities nearby such as Bakersfield.

don't rent helmet, thats nasty. Get a good brand such as Arai or Simpson. For me, I'm cheap so I got a HJC.

One more question: Is a full helmet required or can I get away with a 3/4 face?

uh... kinda. If you don't take the windshield off, you'll be able to use the helmet at Miramar Speed or K1 Speed.

Other than that, for car stuff, I imagine you'd want an open face. Talking, eating, sweating, swearing, all improved with an open face helmet.

really? One day at the track = new tires... I was hoping to have some tread left on these RFT's so that I could take them off keep them for when I return the car at lease end and slap on some good old Non RFT PS2..

Will they be in good enough shape to be put back on the car when I return it?

Buttonwillow July 18th, 19th and 20th

I'm pretty sure you'll need an SA 2005 helmet, but check with BMW CCA. If you plan to attend these events on a regular basis invest in your own helmet. Rentals are gross... Also I've owned a lot of helmets and just bought a HJC AR-10. It's a nice, light weight piece. I don't think it's "cheap" but it was inexpensive. There's actually a BMW CCA Member who sells HJC, if you what to get in touch with him pm me.

I copied the event info below, however if you're a total die-hard there's also a Hooked on Driving day at BW on the Friday before the BMW CCA weekend. A lot of the same Instructors (myself included). I will be instructing Friday through Sunday...

Where to stay! Search Buttonwillow hotel/motel and make a reservation sooner rather than later cause it books up and between the two events you could be SOL if you don't get on it.

Hope to see you there...

Event info:

Online registration is open now. Signup at sdbmwcca.motorsportreg.com Registration is $435 before June 30th and $485 after June 30th. The price includes two full days of on track instruction, lunches, the Saturday banquet and a polo shirt. This will be a combined driving school and BMW CCA club race. There are 80 spots for the driving school.

You can download the tech forms now, in Word Doc format or Adobe Acrobat format

The school will be combined with an exciting BMW CCA club race. You will have the chance to watch the races and mingle with the racers. San Diego chapter racer Matthew Kogan has written a description of the event Racers with valid BMW CCA licenses can need to register with BMWCCA Club Racing and then sign up here.
