M550i Stage 1 Comparisons: Dinan & BMS
Anyone compare the claimed numbers for these two products? The BMS website states, “…up to 60whp range with the n63tu motor.“ Dinan claims “Max HP Gain: 50 @ 6000 RPM (M550i).“
My back of the napkin calculations:
Cost:
The Dinan Stage 1 offers “Maximum Power on the G30 M550i: 590hp, 650 lb-ft of torque (Crank); 475hp, 562 lb-ft of torque (Wheel)” while no additional claimed figures exist on the BMS website for the M550i. Given these figures and the fact that the engine is highly underrated, is it safe to say that the BMS Stage 1 offers well over 600hp and close to 680 lb-ft of torque at the crank? Is my calculation off? Anyone out there had the opportunity to drive both tunes? Thx in advance. I own 2018 m550 and trying to decide between Burger and Dinan tunes. For G30 m550 I would not look into BMS Stage 1 but would rather look into JB4 as you get a lot more out of JB4. On my F10 550 I chose BMS stage 1 as it was 2-3 min to install and JB4 would take an hour or two. For the G30 it is a wash as far as install time between BMS stage 1 and JB4.
Here is my thinking process: I do not really care about car being under rated by the manufacturer and I also do not care what tuners rated the car at… I am not planning to go around and brag to people that I have 500 or 600HP car. I would not worry about the claimed max HP or TQ numbers by either Burger or Dinan. In my mind, I would care about ¼ mile results with and without tune taken at the same track, same weather conditions and with the car at relatively same temp. I would also look at the delta HP and TQ numbers reported by the Tuners and based on their Dyno plots. Stock car can do between 12.1 and 12.3 ¼ mile times and these times depend on many factors that I am not going to get into. From what I have read, only one person with Dinan tune took his M550 to the track and got about .6 sec improvement in 1/4mile time (about 12.3 down to 11.7). Runs were back to back to eliminate many variables. As far Burger JB4, one person posted his results on M550, but he did not do a stock run. He kept improving and got his ¼ time down to 11.3 from original 11.6 Again, true improvement in ¼ mile time was not noted anywhere. For all I know it could have been the same as posted by Dinan user (about 0.6sec) but he just improved his launching technique and weather conditions were more favorable. Burger did not post any dyno plots for G30 but their dyno plots from F10 n63tu show about 100HP and 150TQ gains. Comparing to Dinan that have about 40HP and 50TG increase… I would expect much better 1/4mile times… that has not been documents by anyone, yet. The other consideration for many people is warranty. Even when using piggy back tune from Burger and if you have a major catastrophic failure, it is hard to detect the tune. However, from what I read, if BMW NA really wants to void your warranty, it is possible to detect based on many parameters. With Dinan, you avoid that. At the same time, you can resell the JB4 tune for about half of your initial cost. With Dinan, especially for people like me who lease cars, the reselling value would not be even 50% of the initial cost as the warranty is not transferable (I verified this with Dinan). Why would someone spend more than double for Dinan tune of there is not warranty attached to it. There are a lot of people on this forum that are far more knowledgeable than I am and may rip my post apart, but these are just my thoughts based on Tuners' claims and ¼ mile times posted by users. |

BMS Stage 1: 11.5-11.7 @ 119 trap speed BMS JB4 on Map 2: 11.3 @ 121 trap speed LC was used on all the runs. Trap speed is the true indicator of how much power the car is making relative to its weight, regardless of the ET

Thank you, brother, for correcting me. Once in a while I need to be straighten out.
So the Dinan user did stock 12.3 @ 114.7 and with tune 11.76 @ 119 Your BMW Stage 1 trap speed was the same as Dinan but JB4 went up to 121mph. Would I be assuming correctly then that Dinan and BMS stage 1 should be producing similar HP and TQ gains or there are other variables that I am missing even though we are looking at trap speed? Dinan user is on East coast with altitude about 500' and did runs mid July with 90F and high humidity. |

Now what bugs me a lot is the F90 M5, traps 126 and only does 11.0 lol. I'm dead sure i can do 11.0 ET with 123-124 trap. But that's a separate discussion
