Question about reliability

I am looking into buying an '08 335xi with 100,000km/60,000 miles. The fuel pump and water pump have both been replaced.

The car is stock and I do not plan on doing anything to it, and won't be driving it very hard. No track or anything.

My question is- will I still likely have the typical problems associated with the engine if I'm not driving it very hard and am not modding it? If so, how far down the road will this be?

Is this a horrible decision for a first car? I'm strongly considering a 328i as well, are they fun enough to drive?

Thanks all

I have a 2011 328xi and a 2008 335xi. Its really going to depend on how the previous owner took care of the car. If you are looking for better reliability then 328xi is the best choice for you. If you don’t mind working on your cars and have some cash to invest when things go bad the 335xi is your car.

I agree with cortez08.
The 335xi will be faster and easy to make MUCH faster if you choose too. The 328xi is more reliable. Both cars will need a water pump ASAP if it hasn't been changed. DIY the install and save a bunch of money. Other than that my car has been a blast! Any modifications brighten up the driving experience and these cars are amazing for road trips with friends.

I have a 328 and a 335 and if I were you id go with the 328. For regular day to day driving you wont really notice a difference between the two and the 328 will cost less to own. Also for around the same price as the 335 you'd probably be able to find a LCI (09+) that'll look more modern and have a better navigation system.

First car as in you just turned 16? RIP your parent's bank account

No this car is not reliable at all. Look at all the threads with people having problems

You buying from bmw certified pre owned or private?

Any warranty accompanying this purchase?

Any knowledge or signs if car was tuned?

Any record of maintenance done to the car, because at 100,000km is when things need replacing.

How old are you and what is your diy mechanical skill level (Can you replace shocks, spark plugs on your own)?

- 328i is fun to drive, but it is not as fun as a 335i

Regardless of how easy you go on it the car will still require maintenance. And maintenance is NOT just oil changes. See if the turbos have been changed. If not they'll probably need to be done sometime soon. If you are mechanically inclined and/or want to learn the 335i is actually a pretty good platform to learn on, IMO. If you aren't mechanically inclined I would advise against the 335i. Get a 328i instead.

You mention first car. How old are you? For an inexperienced new driver the 335i is dangerous fast. Sure, it handles great and is safe to hoon, but I know as a new driver I would not have been able to exercise appropriate judgement on when/where to let the car stretch its legs. The 335i isn't the fastest car out there, but it is fast. Legit fast + teenage boy = $$$$ and potential tragedy, IMO.

No, this is not the car for you. Especially if you put more than 15k miles per year. Between all the oil leaks, injectors failing, vacuum leaks, belt shredding, turbos, etc, do not buy this car as an economical daily driver at stock boost. All of these issues and more are standard fair for bmws. The 328i has the same issues with oil leaks from multiple places, oil seeping in one of the sensors that requires the valve cover to come off, etc.

This car is for those who have the time, patience, and money to get their hands dirty and enjoy a fun level of performance while knowing what they are getting themselves into.

Honestly, in this class I would recommend a used g37 for you. It's just as fast stock, all motor, super reliable, sounds nice, and still fun to drive. That's what I would have bought if I didn't know how to do some basic repairs on my own. You can't do any engine mods to make it faster, but you already said you weren't going to anyways.

it is a good car if you know how to turn wrenches and keep up with the maintenance just like a beater, you can buy a camry which is very reliable but if you dont keep up on the maintenance you will have problems in it. if you dont want to do the work your self i would not consider this unless you have deep pockets for the stealership. anything can be a problem if you dont take care of it
