Switching wheels and tires
Here in Australia at launch we are getting the G05 in only two variants - 30d and M50d.
The M50D is only available with 22" wheels in styles: 742 M 22" M light alloy Double-spoke Bicolour Jet Black (9.5x275/35-10.5x315/30) 746 I 22" Individual light alloy V-spoke Orbit Grey (9.5x275/35-10.5x315/30) 747 M 22" M light alloy V-spoke Bicolour Cerium Grey (9.5x275/35-10.5x315/30) This is a problem for me. First I drive on rural roads - rough, pot holes and in some cases dirt - just my driveway alone is 500 feet long, not paved and has sharp rocks. Being very careful the 20" 275/40-315/35's on my F15 are just acceptable with ride and haven't cut a tire (fingers crossed). 22" lower profile wheels/tires are a real concern. Second there is no black wheel option - style 491 black on my white F15 look awesome. I have a white G05 M50d on order and IMHO the big 22" shiny, flashy wheels (even the bicolour) look awful - the only thing that would make them look worse would be if BMW put flecks of sparkly gold glitter in the wheel paint. So, what to do. Q1. Are there any technical or warranty issues with putting any wheel choice available across the entire G05 range on my G05 M50d? Just go buy a set of wheels from BMW parts? I would absolutely be looking at 21" and possibly 20". For example could I put any of the following options offered in Australia on the M50d: **Edited** M50d comes with M-Sport package including M-Sport Brakes - 2NH. So maybe a caliper clearance issue with wheels not in the 30d M-Sport list? The 30d with M-Sport package is offered in Australia with the following styles: 740 M 20" M light alloy Star-spoke Bicolour Orbit Grey (9x275/45-10.5x305/40) 741 M 21" M light alloy Y-spoke Bicolour Orbit Grey (9.5x275/40-10.5x315/35) 742 M 22" M light alloy Double-spoke Bicolour Jet Black (9.5x275/35-10.5x315/30) 746 I 22" Individual light alloy V-spoke Orbit Grey (9.5x275/35-10.5x315/30) and the 30d without M-Sport package is offered in Australia with the following styles: 734 19" light alloy V-spoke Reflex Silver (9x265/50-9x265/50) 735 19" light alloy V-spoke Ferric Grey (9x265/50-9x265/50) 738 20" light alloy V-spoke Bicolour Ferric Grey (9x275/45-10.5x305/40) 736 20" light alloy Star-spoke Ferric Grey (9x275/45-10.5x305/40) 744 21" light alloy Y-spoke Orbit Grey (9.5x275/40-10.5x315/35) 744 21" light alloy Y-spoke Bicolour Orbit Grey (9.5x275/40-10.5x315/35) Q2. What's the best way to get the wheels black - just body-shop painted or powder coated? Suggestions please! P.S. I will also made arrangements with a body-shop to remove the grill and paint it black. Did some diameter and spedo variation calculations on the various wheel/tire options.
Rear wheel/tire (assuming spedo from rear wheel) 22" 315/30 29.441" 60.00 mph 21" 315/35 29.681" 59.51 mph 20" 305/40 29.606" 59.66 mph 19" 265/50 29.433" 60.02 mph Anyone know if there is a coding option that specifies wheel/tire parameters? Body-shop says they clean and then use 2-pack paint. Powder coating shop says sandblast and then powder coat (spray and bake). Hope someone can offer advice/experience. |

I am US based and have a 40i variant - wondering can I switch out the 20inch wheels with the 20" M Star-spoke bi-color wheels, style 740M?
I also need to have 20inch wheels due to our terrible roads in the US (potholes galore.) Anyone have any past experience with this? |

Powdercoat for durability. It will take more work to maintain the same glossy shine as a painted finish but on balance I'd say that's the direction you'd want to go.

Anything 20" and up should fit any X5 - the 19's will not fit if you have the m-sport brakes, but otherwise all 20/21/22 will fit all models and tire diameter is basically the same in all cases.
