Was just wondering what people have on their driveways. The reason I ask is I have just brought up my front drive. I had slabs down and was thinking of puting 40mm plum slate. I was however a little worried how that'll be on the cars tyres and if they would move about when driving off on to the road as I don't want the slate all over the path ? Any one got stone or slate drive ways and happy or not with it 😁

I have asphalt driveways which came with the house when I bought it. I do want to do concrete but when I got the estimate they wanted close to $20K

I have concrete but it was damaged when I bought my home. Apparently there was tree where my drive way is amd the substrate wasn't compacted properly. I got an estimate to have it removed and replaced for $7k. Talked the seller down $10k off their asking price because of it.

A friend of mine mentioned that he knows someone who does some of resurfacing with an epoxy but without the substrate being fixed first, I imagine I'll only have future problems with.

Nice place. How often do you reseal your asphalt? I considered going this route as it will be cheaper and I only plan to stay in my place for another 3 years tops.

I've only been in the house for 2 years now and it looks like the reseal was already done. i'm not sure how long it will last nor do I know when it actually needs to be resealed?

This is driven mostly by local building code. Some areas prohibit asphalt or only allow concrete, etc etc.

My only contribution here is that slate can be very slippery when wet.

Asphalt here too. After about 10 yrs, it was time to address the cracks that had developed. A paver recommended filling them with a tar substance (same used on state roads) but warned I'd have dark black squiggly lines on my faded asphalt. He said he thought sealing asphalt was a waste of time and money but in this case he'd apply a couple of coats with a broom to hide the lines. Said I should go over it again in a couple of years. Turned out pretty nice for $2,200.
Also, I've got some slate stepping stones leading to a patio. +1 on the slippery comment. When those things get wet it's like walking on an ice rink. They'll probably be my undoing one of these days.

Look into a concrete leveling company if you haven't already. They pump some kind of concrete slurry under the slab to fix issues like that. Much cheaper fix. Be careful with resurfacing, never seen it hold up well and always has to be redone with just a new slab. Like someone else said, it's slick, same with stamped concrete...worse stuff ever in winter.

They never make the pour deep enough and the base is a joke. The way they do drives is only adequate for walk ways. New house are horrible in general, I work around them all day every day and everything is rushed and done as cheaply as possible.

I figured they half as and cheap out on the job. It looks real trashy when you see grass/weeds growing thru the concrete.

I had redone my driveway a while back by a reputable concrete/mason buddy. He said most dont do it deep enough to save money. He said concrete flooring should be minimum 4inch depth for most application... but driveways should be 6" min to withstand weight. Also there should be expansion gaps every so many feet to prevent cracking.

I replaced my cracked concrete driveway last year with pavers. Love the look and price (5500.00) was about same as redoing the concrete. Sealing it is a PIA but worth it. Cars look great parked in the driveway now and it definitely upped curb appeal and home value!

I have pavers like most others in FL. They look good and don't need to get sealed that often but they do require cleaning and weed grow between them. Also, trees roots can screw them up and if not installed properly they can sink in some stops and need to get re-leveled.

Look up Uretek. They inject foam under the concrete to stabilize. Drill little 1/2" holes as necessary for access. They can lift flatwork using this method as well to level up panels to one another.

We just built a new house and local code required that a portion of it remained permeable (due to land coverage of other structures). The main driveway is concrete but there are two strips cut out of it which we filled with slate chips - they are positioned so that our cars "straddle" the slate areas when driving up the driveway.

Vehicles are primarily meant to stay on the concrete but occasionally we will hit the slate and delivery trucks drive through it all the time. About 1 yr in and so far no issues with the concrete (cracks have properly been kept to the expansion joints). The slate areas are standing up well to the occasional traffic but the chips do move around a bit and our yard man just sweeps/blows the stray chips back in every time he comes by.

As our driveway slopes down toward the street we do have a few steady chips make their way out to the road every so often, especially in heavy rain. I'd guess that we would need to "top off" the fill every other year or so, but more for leveling/anesthetic than maintaining structure. The contractor did cheap out with a 4 in concrete pour but that means the slate is just as deep.

I used to have 1" river rock which was super easy to put down myself, but did require constant care since weeds would start growing frequently.

Sorry for the late reply guys had my phone stone. See a lot of US use concrete or tarmac I looked at that but would of cost a lot more and trying to keep the cost down as I am extending the back so why I am going to be doing it in 40mm plum slate how come you guys from US don't us stone drive way much any reason?
