iPod Touch issues w/ iDrive? Is it iPod size or higher iOS versions?
I’ve been using a 32gb iPod Touch 6th generation in my 2018 540 since I got it. It has worked flawlessly.
In preparation for our new 2019 X5 (which will replace our 2016 X5), I got another iPod Touch 6th generation to replace the older iPod we were using in the X5. New new iPod is 128gb because the older one was almost full, so I planned to use the bigger iPod in the 540. The new one works terribly both in our X5 and in the 540. It is laggy to respond to inputs/changing the song and artwork sometimes takes a long time to appear—if it all. At first I thought it might be slow because iDrive was re-indexing the new device for voice recognition. However, after two days, it is still behaving the same way. I tried both iPods back to back in the X5 and the behavior was the same. The 32gb iPod works quickly immediately. The bigger one is laggy. Other than the size, the only other difference is that the older iPod is running iOS 10.3.3. The newer one is on iOS 11. (I never upgraded the older one because it was working perfectly and I figured I’d leave well enough alone. Perhaps I was on to something!). Has anyone else seen this issue? Could it be that iDrive doesn’t respond well to the bigger iPod? Or is it iOS 11? Unfortunately, it is no longer possible to downgrade to iOS 10 on the iPod, so I’m going to try upgrading it to iOS 12 to see if that makes any difference. Any insights or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks. iPod Touch issues w/ iDrive? Is it iPod size or higher iOS versions? |

This is the first time I've heard of this. I've been using an iPhone 7 Plus 128GB since I bought my 530e. And it works without any issues. I'm not very familiar with iPods anymore, but shouldn't they be more or less the same as an iPhone without cellular functionality.

What version of iOS is the iPod Touch you have running? If it is iOS 10, I’d be willing to buy it off of you. The new one definitely doesn’t work, and I’m not sure if it is the size or the higher iOS version. Both BMWs don’t like it. It is strange, because the content is identical to the old one—which works fine in both. I was at the Apple store yesterday and they were puzzled, too. My next step here would be to exchange it for a 32gb version, but with iOS 11 or 12 taking more memory, I’m not sure the whole library we have will fit (with iOS 10 we have about 1.5gb left). |

As I mentioned on the other board, it may be time to find another solution. With the iPod being dropped in 2017, its compatibility will decrease as manufacturers test with current OS and products. The optimum solution is moving your iTunes songs to USB or using a streaming service. Either that or use an iPhone for media playback.

Yes, using iPod Touch in both cars. Both are 6th generation. The 32gb on iOS 10 works great in both. The 128gb on iOS 11 and now 12 was laggy (on 11) and now reboots with regularity on 12.

I have the same problem with iPod touch 128gb, iOS 12, with a 2016 Audi A6 - laggy artwork, random resets. This suggests the problem are Californian in origin rather than Bavarian.
It sometimes fails to turn off when the car does - so you come back to a flat iPod. Random resets generally take me to the first artist in the library, either all their songs on repeat, or just one of them. Which is tedious. (I quite liked A-ha back in the day, but now associate them with a crashing iPod...) I think the crash problems come from the iPod and car trying to exchange the contents of the library when it updates - e.g. if you're shuffling a playlist that is sorted by date last played, every time it finishes the song the list order alters. Smart playlists seem to upset it too. And the iPod trying to use the car wifi to download an iOS update throws a spanner too (as well as hoovering up the data). Coping strategies I've tried are (1) avoid smart playlists - use static ones with a non-dynamic sort, and (2) pause the music before turning the car off. Marginally better I think. I had a current model A3 as a hire car last week, which had CarPlay. Drove the music from my iPhone - and it was rock solid. Which makes me wonder about moving to that as a solution. Battery drain from bluetooth streaming would be foul, and I'm not sure I can be bothered to plug it in... I only have the car for another three months, then G31, so interested to hear of your suffering. Hope that helps a bit. |

Campagnolo,
Sounds like the same issue. I wonder if it is iOS 12 or if it just doesn't like the larger capacity device. Our 32gb works perfectly. Your comment about a-Ha made me laugh. In my case, it goes to the first song alphabetically, which is Abacab by Genesis. Needless to say, I don't like that song so much anymore! |
