Carbon or sun/moonroof

Hi Chaps,
Has anyone here gone for the sun/moonroof over the carbon roof ?. Im buying next year, and will be going for the sunroof, as im not bothered about the carbon roof. Its the first thing i do on entering the car, tilt open the roof, and on sunny days, i get more enjoyment from opening the roof, than looking at a carbon roof. Im after MBB, and this colour masks the fact the carbon roof is gone ?.

If you go moonroof, I'd suggest to wrap the roof in gloss black to keep the "sportiness " look

I take it you want to here the exhaust Simon, I would NOT go Sunroof, you have A/C why open a roof?. Your choice not the best RV option IMO.

I love the roof open John, and it would help with the exhaust sound, also brings in a lot of light. Just never been bothered about a carbon roof, even on the M4

This is what I did! I wrap my roof in 3M carbon fiber. The best of both worlds.

5% of the 1,000+ UK F90's built so far have a sunroof.

I think the loss is value down the line is irrelevant when compared to the depreciation on the car from new, so go with what you want. After all, you're going to be driving it for the next few years (or months in the case of some people), so you might as well get the car you want.

While I can see the attraction of the carbon fibre roof for some, I chose the moonroof as I appreciate the extra light in the gloomy rainy Vancouver fall and winter. For me it was the right choice but to each their own,

Moonroof. The carbon roof doesn't really add anything towards performance.
It looks cool, but you lose ambiente lighting, and listening to the exhaust with moonroof open.

I don't see what is the point of this mod (not trying to come across like a jackass, and if I come out like one, I apologize). It is an M5, I think the wrap doesn't really add to the car, especially due to the fact that the gloss back carbon roof has other angles and curves.

No problem at all. It's just my personal preference but I hear you about the angles/shapes of the carbon roof

CF roof significantly improves handling and body roll. I'd stay with the CF roof.

That has never been proven. In the E90 days, the japonese magazine that drives cars on track, drove an E90 Sedan and an E92 Coupe (one with moonroof the other with CF roof), and the cars were equally quick (with 0.02s of one another after a ton of laps in the same day). I understand the handling balance between Sedan and Coupe is different, but the CF roof doesn't add that much. Besides it is still a steel frame roof with CF on top, so there is very little difference to a normal steel roof structure. If you are talking about a panoramic and gnormous moonroof like the one the E63 S has, all right, I will concede that there is some difference (not as much as you say though). But in the case of the M5, the difference is minimal, if not nul.

I searched and shipped a car from Virginia to Los Angeles just for the moon roof. Can't imagine being in sunny Socal and not having the moon roof open on a nice day to get some cool air and to hear the Eisenmann exhaust. The moon roof option does look sporty but for me it didn't make any sense for my climate

I never use moon roof - so easy choice for me.
Since you the op, said you like, then do it.

I'm also a bit blessed I suppose as my wife car is a convertible and can drive that for fun too.

All my cars have sunroof but the M5 MUST have CF roof. The CF roof enhances the sportiness of the M5. You will not regret your decision, OP.

I really like the extra lines of the Carbon Roof with the M5 Comp in MBB, Black Wheels Black Mirrors, Black Carbon Roof Black Carbon side skirts and Black Carbon rear diffuser Black Grill and I want to get the Pro M Black Carbon wing lol.

But it is all personal preference the dealer I ordered my car from will not order an M5 or M5 Comps for stock without a sunroof only special orders getting the Carbon they are scared of having an M5 without a sunroof sitting in stock.

You should get what you want and what makes you happy the M5 will be awesome with or without a sunroof!

I enjoyed the moonroof on my F10. I used it a lot. I was torn on whether to get the moonroof on the F90, but I am SOOOO glad I got the carbon roof. It looks incredible, and really makes the car that much better looking.

I'm usually against added carbon elements on most cars because it looks chintzy...but on this car, it looks like its at home.

Completely agree. The small trade off in terms of looks and rigidity, is more than made up by the extra sun light and sound.

Carbon all the way, its like passing up a couple of thousand dollars option if you don't order it.

OK guys an M4 lover here. Unfortunately with the current M4 with Carbon Fiber Roof there is NO actual roof mounting brackets/bolts for a Thule Rack. For some reason they did not include that, to me it's a total F-up, because the previous model had that. You can only get the bolts with the Metal w/Sunroof option. I don't care about having a metal roof, BUT I do NOT want a sunroof. I don't get why it's not included and they have not fixed it yet. It can't be a structural thing because it bolts into the frame of the roof pillars.

I just looked at the brand new M5, here is a photograph of the roof mounting/bolt. Can anyone tell me is it actually functional on the new M5.

I am working hard to get this standard option on all BMWs in the M4.
