Steering

Does anyone feel like the steering has to much play in it ? (In DD comfort)
Especially driving today in the rain, AWD and everything and still felt dangerous....like I had to over focus.

For around town, comfort level steering is okay. Really light.
Anything else, especially highway, I kick it over to Sport plus. Tightens up nicely and tracks down the road like a train.

I also don't like the feel in "comfort" at all... Feel like it's too loosey-goosey

Never had this sensation in Comfort. If you compare comfort mode for the steering in the M5 to comfort in any BMW, there is a massive difference in weight, and directness. May be only me, but I don't feel such a massive difference from Comfort to Sport Plus.

I agree my kids 3 series feels more controlled then comfort. The sports plus is a mild change but its another setting to adjust every time I drive. I guess I'll have to program a M button to drive Normal.

I only drive the steering in sport + all the time - comfort is way to light for me.

+1. I don't feel like Sport+ is heavy at all ... I think it feels like it should all the time. I'd be OK if BMW re-calibrated the steering one notch higher so the current sport would be the new comfort, the current sport + would be the new sport and a new even firmer sport + would be added.

Main issue I have with steering is I feel the bass of music playing on steering wheel even at pretty low volumes. Also feel the engine. Makes no difference if it is comfort, sport or sport plus. Does anybody else have this "noises" on steering wheel or is it just me?

I only drive it in sport steering and 4WD Sport MDM (M Dynamic Mode) Found out this is the best configuration.

I find comfort best for parking garages where you gotta do a lot steering.

Wonder why nobody else is mentioning this. Unless our cars only have this issue, if this is how it is, it is a major flaw with steering and makes driving it so not enjoyable.

I am taking the car back to dealer again tomorrow to check this out.

Just to give you feedback on steering wheel vibration:

I can “barely” feel the difference when I put my winter tires in my X5M. At 80mph the steering wheel is not perfectly still, but close. But , I know the winters are on by the steering wheel feel. Most would never know.

My M5 has zero vibration at 80mph. Nothing. Just another data point for you.

I specifically paid attention to this last night because of this comment. I felt zero base vibration in the steering wheel. On the EQ, I only have the base set a few notches above base line so if you have added a lot more base that may be the cause.

Mine is actually set exactly in the middle - no notches up. Even at volume of about 20 percent I feel whatever is playing through the steering wheel. When car is running even at idle I feel the engine plus music. If I turn the music off I feel the engine only. Have not had this with any BMW in the past including my previous M4.

Thanks - Mine, at any speed, feels like I am holding a power tool that goes on and off based on road imperfections, if I am accelerating and music playing. I definitely know it is not balancing since I even replaced tires and balanced and did alignment twice - plus the feeling of music and engine on steering wheel is even when the car is not moving. Note that if I hold the door handle I also feel the same so it is the chassis too but it is more pronounced on steering wheel.

All I can think of is that there is some defect in specific cars if most here report no such issue. Possibly some bushings or mounts failing that are meant to absorb these "noises". I only have 2.3k miles and this started at about 300-400 miles if I remember correctly.

I hate that you are having that problem. Sounds like engine vibration is transferring to the chassis/ steering. I would look HARD at the motor mounts and the steering mounts. If their durometer is off, could be a problem.

Yes, mine had them for first 2k miles. Then they were removed but problem remained. Could be the stress of shipping blocks on bushings/mounts that caused all this for me.

So went and test drove another 2018 M5 - same specs with my car. This one too at idle you feel the engine vibrating the steering wheel. Also just barely playing music you feel it on steering wheel. People here mentioned they feel nothing - either there are some different M5s out there or??

Also drove it around, and even though it was smoother than mine, you could still feel the engine on your feet even barely tapping the gas from 1500 to 2000 RPM.

But still nobody here has this?

Just did another test on my drive home from the gym. Phil Collins "In the Air Tonight" came on and I cranked the volume at the middle of the song where the drums and bass guitar kick-in. I could feel the bass thumping through my back via the seats, through my arm on the center armrest, even through my foot on the dead pedal, but I felt only the tinniest bit of vibration in my hand on the steering wheel ... and I couldn't even tell if what I felt in my hand was coming through the steering wheel or just through the air in the cabin.
