X3m40i vs x5 mid tier
Seems like a somewhat loaded question to ask on the x5 forums.
Given the option would you take a fully loaded x3m40i or a base mid tier x5? I have a first model year X3m40i that was littered with issues. Possibly going through a buy back process and torn on what to do; was never fully content with the noise level leak into the x3 cabin or the road feel from the m sport suspension. |

Drove x3m40i and g05 x5 back to back and bought an x5 so much more up to date and x3 feels dated in comparison. X5 does feel bigger and doesn’t handle quite as well though even with M-Sport option.

I was thinking about X3 M40i:
- the final difference in price with the same level of equipment was less than 10%. - much more comfortable seats in the X5 - in X3 I could not find my settings - The X5 already has a new interface, and in X3 it will appear after facelift or with the new model. - Smaller trunk and less space for children at the back in X3 X3 M40i is a great car for everydays driving and probably gives more fun, but i think i would regret not to choose X5. |

Why buy 2 BMW SUVs? Get an M2/M4 Competition + the X5 then you cover all bases and have the best of both worlds v a compromise.
The interior of the X3 killed it for me, especially the plastic/rubber roller cover in the lower dash (same as outgoing X5). The X3 looks nice from the outside but is in my view pitched much lower on the luxury scale. Seems a no-brainer to me! |

Totally different cars even thought they look similar on the outside.
X3 will have a far more fun drive (faster and agile) and less boot space and very plasticky interior and make you feel younger (than an x5 owner). X5 is way more luxurious, comfortable, bigger boot and make you feel like the invincible. If you want best of both pay a lot more and get a loaded cayenne s which would probably cost as much as an x3 and x5.

I have an X3 M40i and I think the new X5 is just not sporty enough for me. I drove an X5 40i M Sport and event set to sport plus it left me wanting more. If I needed the space and wanted more luxury then the X5 would make more sense.

Did you get to drive one though? I honestly haven't and ordered blindly after driving the 40i knowing it would be better. I couldn't be find a single 50i at any dealer to test

Coming from a 2011 X5 (Diesel). 2018 / 2019 X3 looked like a 'no-brainer', but interior felt cheap. Then Consumer Reports put X3 on 'Not recommended' list. Reviewing X5's now. |

I briefly thought about the X3 M40 but I want / need a full sized suv. The X5 is big enough, but not too big that you feel like you're driving a land yacht. Somewhat on topic. I don't understand the 50i. When I'm driving the X5, I'm not looking to break speed records, so the ~300 hp is plenty. Additionally, I'm not trying to waste money on gas with a bigger engine. I get the desire for "more power" and to have the top of the line spec, but if that's the case, then the jump to an X5M would seem logical (price aside). X5 = relaxing, comfortable ride while hauling stuff. M2 / M4 = speed, adrenaline rush |

I totally understand only having 1 car, so if money isn't an issue, that begs my question of why not get the X5M? |

The X5M isn't out yet and I'm happy with a 50i

Regarding the X3 M40i vs the X5, we made the switch recently. The X3 is actually really fun to drive. Feels quick, has some steering feel, is balanced when throwing it around and overall urges you to put it in Sport Plus and act way younger than you actually are. Downside is that the ride is harsh with the static suspension, doesn't have great space in the backend and feels a bit tight overall. Our X5 MSport is the opposite end of the spectrum. Make no mistake, this is a big luxury car and IMO is way better than the 5 series for that mode. Interior and exterior are beautiful, tech is really good, ride is excellent and it is incredibly quiet and relaxing to drive. The negative is a much more disconnected driving experience. Steering is pretty numb, the motor is not nearly as inspiring in this chassis and overall it does not like to be thrown around. In the end it comes down to priorities. The X3 M40i makes going to the store for milk fun. 99% of the time I was in Sport Plus running it up and down the rev range listening to the exhaust and hammering every corner I could find. It didn't make any logical sense, but I had more fun driving it than my old M4. Something about the accessibility of the performance and the way it feels at 70% is flat out enjoyable. The X5 makes me feel like a grownup. It has presence that the X3 lacks, is incredibly comfortable for long road trips and overall is one of the best luxury vehicles available at any price right now. It strikes the right balance in ride, power and comfort for the target it is trying to hit. Don't think for second that you will get the same driving dynamics as the X3 though. It is a different vehicle for a different market. |

We don't have a choice in the UK of the 50 but a sub-6 second car to 60 is going to be faster than 90% of other cars on the road in the UK... |

By this time next year, consumers report will have the same negative rating of the X5.
