Do you own or lease?

Curious, do you own or lease your X5 and why?

Own, I drive a lot and leases won't work. The car will depreciate either way, at least with owning you can control more things I. e. drive more just pay more (assuming it's financed in some way) to account for the additional miles. Leasing has it's pros too like getting a new car every 3 years

Some states, CA for example, when you lease a vehicle, you only pay the sales tax on the monthly payment.
Some states, (NY is one), you have to pay the full sales tax within the timeframe(24-48 months) of the lease.

Own. This is a long-term purchase for me if it performs as well as my F15.

Own. This car is fresh for 7 years with this new body. Worth keeping 7 years and with that time frame come out ahead of you buy versus lease

Own. Among other reasons, I like that I get to keep the plate I've had since I was 18yrs old - came with my first car.

My car. My plate. Always been that way.

Wait, are you forced to have a different plate on a leased vehicle? I've never heard of that, then again I don't lease.

I ask because I've always owned. Leasing sounds more expensive overall but I do think it's nice to keep getting a new car. Dealers are always pushing leases so I'm skeptical...

Do you worry about repairs after the warranty is up?

Yes - at least, in MA where plates move from vehicle to vehicle with the owner... in a lease, you do not own.

Thing is - I have a "Greenie" - an older green-lettered plate that was printed back when you were allowed to only have a rear plate, no front.

State stopped printing them in 1988... It's not the only reason I own, but it's kept me from even considering a Lease.

Hate front plates. Love that this one has been with me since the first day I wrapped my fingers around a steering wheel that was mine.

I have only owned 2 cars so far where I would be liable for post-warranty repairs. In both cases (1998 Dodge Durango, 2008 Infiniti FX45) I think I had less than $2k in post-warranty costs (brakes, fluids, tires, etc) over its life.

So my experience has been pretty good regarding unanticipated repairs outside warranty and so I don't worry. The only big ticket item was on the used Infiniti where previous owner had damage that my inspection didn't detect and 2 years later the rust caused a strut to fail (luckily in my driveway) and $600 later I was back in business.

I didn't know that, then again I lived there when I was younger and for a while about 7 years ago. I never changed to MA plates (purposely) but also hate front plates like you do. Hell, I don't put mine on here in Texas and gave gotten pulled over numerous times because of this. While I'll eventually need to put one on (I can't get warnings forever) I can enjoy my time without one for now.

Own, as I typically keep my car 7-8 years and don't like being forced into trading at a specific point in time.

75-80% of BMW and AUDI buyers lease according to several dealers.

Own, I buy outright because I prefer to not have monthly payments .
I only average 5000 miles per year and I usually keep my cars for 5-7 years.
