I currently have a '15 M4 with every option except DCT and carbon brakes. I love the car and drive it 15k miles a year with *zero* issues and all the fun. It's tough to consider getting rid of a car that nets me 20 MPG with plenty or horses and is so much fun while being very reliable. Plus, I honestly think a daily should not exceed a certain amount of value due to the higher risk like where to park, curbed wheels, etc.

So, I want to take a different route next year. I'm entertaining getting rid of the M4, getting a garage queen, and getting a different daily. The garage queen would be between the two cars in the title. They’re totally different cars, yes, but they're floating in that $85k-$110k range depending on spec, miles, etc. I feel like the R8 V10 has seen its value bottom out for the most part, so the price should steady out since it's one of the last manual V10s. I’ll add that I do not like the new body style. Then you have the GT4 which is a completely different car.

Obviously, when the time is near, the best thing to do is drive both. Until then, my question is, which do you think would be the better of these the two? I'm curious what your thoughts are!

(Also, I'm not too versed in the Porsche world so when I was researching it was crazy to see the current 718 GTS is a 4 cyl! )

Great choices...personally I’d go the GT4 route for two reasons: driving dynamics and resale value.

I would go with the R8. The V10 would be so much fun and it's manual. R8 would be a lot more unique vs a GT4.

Tough call. I would go for the gt4 because I love Porsches and it seems like the better weekend/fun car. More raw and better driving dynamics vs the R8 which sounds and looks phenomenal but is more of a GT car.

My friend has both a GT4 and an R8. His description is that the GT4 is hard-core, with an amazing connection between car and driver, but too rough for daily duty. The R8 is a "big comfy rocket." The GT4 is hands down the better track car to him, and the R8 is better for around town/cruising.

That 4cyl gts has shown to produce better lap times than gt4, given equipped with same tires. But wo flat6 howl, it looses 80% of porsche involvement id say.. esp in normal daily usage

Can't go wrong with either of them.

R8 likely has bottomed and will be timeless IMO but might get more attention than you want. But if you're getting a second daily, then maybe the extra attention is what this car is all about! Plus that V10 is a reason all by itself.

GT4 is great. Doesn't have the visceral feel of the V10 but the car itself is a lot more connected and go-kart like. If you want a car that feels more connected but not as brutal and showy, the GT4 would be my pick. But it does blend in quite a bit...which has both its ups and downs. The GT4 will probably feel much less dated too, and should hold it's value fairly well.

GT4 is more of an enthusiast car. Those who know, know. The R8 is more of a "look at my supercar" car. Drive them both. Think about how they'd fit into your routine and life. I was in a similar situation considering a RWS R8 vs. a GT3 and decided GT3 for a multitude of reasons.

GT4. My friend drove his GT4 3,000 kms on a road trip and marveled at how much more comfy it was compared to his 2017 AMG C63 S Sedan.

Buy whatever car has the manual transmission. If both cars have a manual transmission buy the one with the better power to weight ratio. If the power to weight ratio is tied buy the car with the better resale value. If the resale value is tied buy the better car that makes you happy.

Keep in mind that the GT4 is not particularly fast. It's a dynamic car with a flawless shifter, immediate steering and it sounds great.

I think a GT4 is a very nice compliment if you already have a really fast car. Otherwise, you may miss that sensation of thrust.

interesting dilemma
I have considered a somewhat similar scenario for a garage queen with my choices being between a 991.1 gts manual vs an r8 v10 manual
I have had 2 981 cayman s a 2014 and a 2016
I have yet to drive a gt4 or an r8 v10
a friend actually had a 991.1 gts and a 2014 r8 v10 manual at the same time
he said overall he preferred the connection he felt driving the porsche
there is s fluidity and integration to porsche products that tends to bring lots of smiles per mile
but that v10
if you care about torque and exotic sound and looks then v10 all the way
if you care about compact size and driving connection then gt4
rhe other thing to note is that the r8 is the costlier choice...depreciation will be a wash but the gt4 will be cpo and under warranty for another 3 years
a lot could go wrong with the r8 in those three years
keep us posted on what you finally choose

I have driven a 2018 R8 V10 and a 2016 GT4.

R8
- lacks soul and drama
- not as engaging to drive
- drives like an Audi
- very fast, but does not feel as fast
- has supercar looks that suggest a $200K tag
- more appropriate as a garage queen
- gets a lot of attention

GT4
- fun factor is up there
- very engaging to drive
- tighter/harder suspension
- not an appropriate garage queen
- If you like M cars, you will like the GT4

Wow thanks for all the feedback and I'm glad other people see it as a worthy competitor even though being two completely different cars

I totally agree that the R8 is more friendly in the comfort world but has a screaming V10 which is rare on its own being offered in a manual and is the faster of the two

GT4 is pretty much a go kart as I agree with that but really caters to the "purist" side of me when it comes to engineering, craftsmanship, and driver connection

I live in a place with tons of twisties and sweeps in both flat land and mountains so I could take advantage of the handling over power


I'll start the process after tax season then the next step would be to start searching for that perfect spec!

IMO I see GT4 as a daily and not a garage queen. If you would have said GT3 then that’s a different story.

Do you have to have a manual? If not, have you thought about the M4 GTS since you already love your M4? (rightfully so!)
