Arrivabene out at Ferrari
The long rumored change has finally been announced. Arrivabene out, Binotti in as Ferrari Team Principle. Savage article by Will Buxton on the official F1 site. Here are a couple of excerpts:
"Despite Arrivabene’s initial public-facing moves being to play up to the fanbase and exude an aura of inclusion and friendliness, his first decisions, as observed by those of us who work inside the paddock, were completely at odds with the smiles and bravado. The walls, both physical and metaphorical, were quick to go up around the team. But far from creating a safe environment in which the once mighty outfit could rebuild, it appeared that what was being built was a system built on the fear of failure. For some, Arrivabene was seen as little more than a Marchionne puppet and a man who simply did as he was ordered by a boss determined to obliterate the long shadow left by Luca di Montezemolo and establish his own legacy on the brand. Yet for others, the style of Arrivabene’s leadership was seen as being entirely of his own making. Those that had known him throughout his time with the team’s longest standing partner believed that what they were witnessing was the true side of the man, now emboldened by power and position." Ouch. Cheers-mk

Lewis crushed Vettel in the 2nd half of the season. Germany was the beginning of the end and the deathblow was administered in Monza. It was well and truly over but for the possibility of massive mechanical failures. In the wonderful autobiography of General Chuck Yeager he discusses the time he did a test flight of the Russian MiG 15. One of his compatriots said that it was a piece of junk and the F-86 would kill it all day. General Yeager said no, it's really up to the pilot because the performance is so similar. His colleague disagreed so they went up with the General flying the F-86 first and he got a simulated kill on the MiG. They then swapped aircraft and General Yeager killed the F-86. It's the same case with Ferrari vs. Mercedes for 2018. The cars performed so closely that the operator is the difference and Lewis simply showed that his is the best driver of his generation and probably the GOAT.

Certainly wish Binotto well. I prefer engineers running race teams...and speaking more on that, it's remarkable the similar appearance of Mattia Binotto to "the last total engineer", Mauro Forghieri, the team principle, head engineer, and car designer for Ferrari in the 60's & 70's.

And, especially for the manufacturers, engine development is pretty easy to hide in larger operations.

I like how everyone craps all over Vettel, yet he's obliterated both RAI and BOT for 2 years straight. IMO, Vettel is among a small number of drivers (along with Alonso) that can consistently split the Mercs, and leave his teammate in the dust. |

This will be interesting. Arrivabene was exhausted by the end of last year. so a change in the team is likely a net positive. as long as the change to Binotto is not too disruptive. Leclerc joining will very likely put pressure on Vettel. I think it could go either way for Ferrari. IMHO, I think the odds on LH taking another WDC shortened a little.
Too many variables right now. who knows, Bottas could implode and never be in the right position to be the wingman. leaving LH exposed to 2 fast ferrari cars. |

It has to really hurt losing a job like that. I mean most occupations etc. at least have the opportunity for lateral movement if you quit/get fired, but where do you go after being the Team Principal at Ferrari?
