Question USB - Charging Voltage in Built In Ports?

Hello fellow readers,

I picked up my new X5 early December and am still in awe of how different this is from my '16 X5. I am impressed with how much connectivity the vehicle offers but curious to know what the ports can handle. I recently picked up the "travel & comfort" table for the rear passengers (my two toddlers) and would like to know if those rear ports can handle charging iPads? What can the front and mid console ports handle? Lastly, is the wireless charging bay a fast charger?

I do not have a USB voltage meter but would request if a forum member does would you mind posting the results for the group.

Many, many thanks in advance.

I dont have a voltage meter either, but I hooked up amazon fire tablets to the usbc on the back of the seats and the tablet actually gave me a notification saying this is a low voltage power source so will take longer to charge. I bought an inverter on amazon from 12v to 110 v and they charge much faster now

USB specs in the technical guides.

2.3.3. USB
Different USB interfaces are provided in the G05 depending on the vehicle equipment.
USB interfaces:
• Type A in the center console.
• Type C in the center armrest.
• Type C charging only 2 x in the backrests.
• Type C 2 x in the Rear Seat Entertainment control panel (from 11/18).

A charge current of max. 1.5 A is available via the USB port in the center console.

A charge current of max. 3 A is available via the USB port in the center armrest and via all the other USB ports in the rear passenger compartment.

Ports do not support PD.

That is quite a thorough reply, thank you. So by that token, the rear ports should be able to handle iPads at 3 A. Strange that group member salfeet84 stated a slow charge for his tablets. I will have to investigate this and try it out, which I have not done yet myself.

BTW, I have the Executive Tier which includes the enhanced USB and Bluetooth, not sure if that affects the voltage or not.

salfeet84 - thank you for the recommendation, I'll look into the device but I was hoping to not clutter the new car

I have the executive package and I bought a USB type C to A converter to charge the iPad. I didn't see any low voltage message and they charged just fine. I did not check the charge rate though.

The voltage message can be fussy with various devices. That doesn’t mean it won’t charge fine.
My kids iPad Air 2 and Lenovo Tab a charges fine from the back seat charger. I use adapter plugs purchased from Amazon for the USB C.

Should he 5V/3A max depending on what port. I have a USB C multimeter but no X5 yet due to delays. I could stop by my local dealer and test one if someone wants

I tried mine with Samsung s9+ and in all doors I get slow charging. All. In the back also.
Only option for fast charging is if connected to lighter connector with a fast adapter

I have a S9+ too, let me see if my local dealer has any and I'll test the current draw with my USB C meter.

5A? No, it depends on the charging spec of the device in question. I wish they used USB C PD but I doubt it. I'll have to verify at some point but there are different specs. Fast charging is usually done at 9V/12V/20V over USB C PD but can also be done at 5V. The higher voltage means less heat for the same power output. 5V/2A generates more heat than 9V/2A for example. I have no idea what BMW is using so we will see. 5 Amps or 5A is way too much to do in a car over USB C unless they're using power delivery at 20V ,5A isn't really a charging spec

Yes, if you wouldn't mind that would be ideal. Thanks that way we can have definitive answers.

I'll do my best, it really depends on whether or not my dealer has one in stock (they're very small but sell a ton of //M cars, in fact they have 2 M3CS' currently.

The voltage of USB interfaces is specified by the USB standard, not BMW. Given that the ports don't support Power Delivery, the output voltage will be capped at 5V. Power Delivery is a standard that allows devices connected to the port to negotiate with the power supply to switch to a higher voltage; without negotiation that standard states that an initial voltage of 5V must be used. Unless some kind of proprietary standard is used (Qualcomm used to have its own QuickCharge protocol, but seems to be phased out in favor of Power Delivery), 5V is what the port will provide. But I doubt BMW would implement any proprietary protocol in its USB ports anyway.

As specified in the technical documents, the maximum current allowed through the USB ports is 3A. Some USB-C-to-A adapters may limit the current being passed through them, especially if that adapter was designed for the USB 3.0 protocol. USB 3.x protocols have a default current of only 0.9A.

That seems correct, most devices can usually pull 5V/2A without some proprietary or open standard. Most phones or devices will be just fine with that much power. I was going to test the ports at a dealer today, now it doesn't seem necessary

I can say for sure that the wireless charging tray is slow as hell. In about 2 hours it charged my S9 only 10%.

Does anyone know how long do USB ports as well as front and back 12V ports stay active after car is locked/walked away with comfort access? I plugged a light the other day working on the back, I tested it and walked away came back about 3-4 minutes later, light was still on. Do they not shut off eventually?

Thank you, 10-15 minutes, that's pretty long. I was just reading another thread where someone hooked up their rear dashcam to cargo area 12V port, which is pretty easy to do, I wanted to do that and tested with a light and light kept on close to 5 minutes. Manual did not specifically mention anything about the charging ports, thanks for the info. However it says if the battery is low it also cuts power, do we know if X5 (gas) has self-low voltage cut off for idle state?

I searched for "several minutes" and never thought I should look for "Idle State".

Automatic idle state
The idle state is automatically established under the following conditions:
Operating state of the vehicle
▷ After several minutes, if no operation takes place on the vehicle.
▷ If the charge state of the vehicle battery is low.
▷ Depending on the setting via iDrive, if one of the front doors is opened when exiting the vehicle.

It also somehow says we can do it manually by:

Manual idle state
To establish idle state in the vehicle after end of trip:
Press and hold the button until the OFF indicator on the instrument cluster goes out.

Idle state
Concept
When the vehicle is in idle state, it is switched off. All power consumers are deactivated.

General information
The vehicle is in idle state prior to opening from the outside and after exiting and locking.
