Winter Setup - First Timer
First time owning an SUV, BMW, and Performance Vehicle. I am picking up from the PCD on Thursday.
50i M Sport Black Sapphire/Tartufo/22" wheels I live in Michigan, and have an F250 as my daily. So I have never had to purchase wheels/tires for winter. Been doing a lot of research on here, but would like more clarity. Would y'all mind sharing your suggestions? I would prefer to stay with BMW wheels. |

Hey welcome and congrats!
We live in Bloomfield Hills,Mi btw. We have few Audis and a 2015 BMW X5 that we swap out for winter wheels/tires. Its much better to have separate rims and downsize to 19 inch for the winter and gets some Blizzaks. I got the Blizzaks DM2 on the BMW X5 for winter time and wow its amazing compared to all seasons in winter time on ice, snow, slush etc. Got performance tires on my A7 and family A8 so we swap them for winters. Tirerack carries a great selection of tires and Blizzaks are my favorite followed by Michelin XICE. Auto Europe in Birmingham has a huge service department that swaps out winter/summer wheels every spring and fall an store your alternate set after swapping so its very conveniet. They hold over 150 sets of tires including few of ours and they have done great job in doing mounting and perfect road force balancing on our wheels/tires. Definitely stay with BMW wheels as they are far stronger than aftermarket. |

Hello CndBMW -
Did your Michelin Pilot Sport 5 winter tires come with your BMW build or did you do this after. I am searching for these tires but most of the websites dont show this option for the OEM staggered 21 style 744 wheels. Do you have links you can share ? |

Blaked - congrats and welcome to the forum.
I too perused through this forum to find answers and finally settled with purchasing a winter wheel set that I could just swap myself. Similar to what rexus was indicating, except that I went with the 748M 20" with a square set-up (all four wheels being the same size, versus my 21" 741m with a staggered set-up). Got it for $4k at my dealer's parts department after tax (barely got a discount, even after playing the active duty military card). I also have an 03' F-250 as my daily, with the X5 x40i M sport being my wife's daily and our family car to haul our two toddlers. Being that Kansas does get a decent amount of snow and ice, I didn't want us ice skating in the winter. Yet, being that we have the M sport brakes, they barely fit the 19s (many have said the 19s won't fit. i've seen it fit by somebody on this forum, but i didn't want to risk less than a half inch clearance). Here are some considerations: 1. Immediately swapping out the tires with A/S tires and selling your summers (whether on this forum or somewhere else). 2. Purchasing a set of winter wheels and tires and doing it yourself. - I suspect you could do this yourself (being that you're a Ford guy); otherwise, the cost would outweigh the benefit if you're paying to swap wheels twice a year. I got everything I needed for around $200 (decent floor jack, 17mm non-marking lug nut socket, breaker bar, and torch wrench). - also went with BMW because like you, I wanted to keep it BMW, and the wheels come already balanced. All you have to do is swap, change the setting to winter tires, and reset the TPMS. however, the 748Ms are run-flats, and tracking your 22s are not. 3. Swapping tires twice a year. - yet again, by year 4-5, your cost of swapping those tires after purchasing winter tires could almost equal just purchasing a winter set and doing the swaps yourself. of course, this also depends how long you're planning on keeping the car. - also, if swapping tires, you're still on 22", which doesn't give you a lot of sidewall (since people are more prone to curb rashes in the winter with snow on the ground). Check out the 19/20 winter wheel set catalog: https://www.shopbmwusa.com/winter-tire-catalog-19 - more up to date prices are on shopbmw though. this was all trying to be cost conscious, and this is how i convinced my wife to spend another $4k, but who are we kidding when trying to be cost conscious. We drive BMWs... |

Before this X5 I had a 535D, no X-drive. Summer tires : vredestein 20" , winter tires, Pirelli Sotozero 19" On that car it was a huge difference in the snow, the vredestein where not usable in the snow. The pirelli's did well :-) |

Thanks! We get a lot of snow here in Ottawa Canada, so I am hoping they will do well. I've usually had Michelin or Continental winter tires, which I've been happy with, but now I need runflats since they won't sell me a spare tire here!!! It would probably be cheaper for me to buy the non-runflats and buy a spare tire (if I could find one), but what can you do...

This catalog shows that BMW has the 21" staggered setup wheels with Pirelli Scorpion Winters 245-40-R21 and 315-35-R21. Unfortunately they are available as wheel and tire set only. I already have this staggered setup with Pirelli PZero summer and I am just looking for the Scorpion Winter tires not the wheel tire set. Pirelli website shows these tire sizes available but unfortunately stores don't carry it. Does anyone here have links to stores who can provide just the tires and not the set ? |

Will be cheaper from tire rack, but if you want the sale, delivery, and install via a dealership of your choice, this website is where you want to go. |

I ordered the only 22" winter tire made in the factory spec size for the X5: the Pirelli Scorpion Winter
(DOT laws in Germany don't offer much flexibility on tire sizing) That being said, I couldn't see the point in opting for the black factory 22" wheels, and then swapping the look/having to live with a smaller, not as fitting size for winter. Sure there may be some benefit, but I love the look with the factory 22s. Price is a bit crazy though. I got a "deal" (albeit waiting too long to pull the trigger as I ordered last week instead of early fall: 2600 Euros installed. That's insane for tires but on a 128,000 Euro truck, it's all relative.

I have a 45e with tow hook. 22" are not allowed then. So I needed a smaller set to go to techical inspection in the feature. I sold the oem summer wheels. Waiting for months for a set of custom 22" wheels..

I am working the math and looking at various options My existing 21" staggered setup wheels with Pirelli Scorpion Winter runflats 21" staggered setup with Pirelli Scorpion All season non RF 19" wheel-tire set from tire rack and doing Pirelli Scorpion Winter RF. Tire rack says broad and low profile wheels and snow don't do that well compared to 18-19" with high profile tires. I am thinking swapping the tires on the wheel (2x a year) vs just 19" separate setup which I can install myself in garage, the later is better. I may even be able to do it over weekends before and after my ski trips. But Somehow I am not able to bring my mind to terms with 19" from 21". Oh and by the way I am in AZ with weekend ski trips and that's what this is about after my X3 all seasons gave me a close shave last year. Pirelli scorpion winters seem to rack up good reviews for 60-80F temperatures too. |

Nevertheless, I just did the swap from my 21" 741M Perelli Summers to 20" 748M Perili Winters two weeks ago, in my garage, by myself. First time ever (but enough experience changing out flats in my lifetime - that's really the extent of experience you need), and it took me 1.5 hours. I'm confident it'll take me half that time next time (I'm pretty meticulous with preparations and not scratching my M Sport brake calipers). One thing you definitely need are a pair of wheel hangers (M14 x 1.25) if you're doing this alone. I swapped the tire set knowing it'll get down to 40F during the days at that time, and didn't want to risk my summers cracking from the cold. Yet, it's been 30-65F for the past week from evening to afternoon. Typically doing the majority of driving during the day in the 60s, I've noticed my braking distance has increased a little bit, but nothing significant that I'm worried about an accident. However, I've yet to drive these in snow/ice yet, so can't give you an experienced perspective, but it does fine in rain thus far. Lastly, I'm confident most od us can't see the significance in stopping distance between low profile versus high profile winters. It's the same surface with the same tire tread depth that makes contact to grip as much road/snow/ice as possible for stopping. The real difference is wheel protection from curbs and rocks that are harder to see when snow is on the ground. |

Thanks BHCJJS.
So after a lot of reading and a few phone calls to tire rack, I am going the 19" + Pirelli Scorpion Winter RF setup. I was more inclined towards the 20" but I am not getting RF tires but just non RF ones. Hence 19". Tire rack shows widths for 19" wheels : 19x8 and 19x9 both as O.E. Diameter. On BMW official catalog they show 19x9j to keep it universal to work with larger Msport brakes I think. I don't have the Msport brakes. Any comments if I chose 19x8? Most of 19x9 are unavailable and sold out. Tire rack mentioned both of them will work and have been tried and tested and hence listed for my vehicle. Just wanted to know if you have any comments. Thanks a lot - you have been very helpful as I enter this space. In my X3 I never bothered earlier with A/S tires. Quote:
